THE DAILY TAK, HEEL Page 4 Netters Annex Vacation Wins By RUSTY CARTER l)TH Sports Writer While most of the school spent nearly a week soaking up rays on one of the over-crowded eastern beaches, Carolina's varsity tennis team remained in sunny Chapel Hill. They didn't get to relax the strand or Tight their way through ridiculous crowds of drunken college students, but they did make their "vacation" worthwhile. Taking off only Easter Sunday and Monday, the netters played five matches in seven days and kept their record unblemished as they won all five. The spring break wins moved the UNC team's record to 13-0 with the conference meets starting Saturday at Clemson. Carolina began its streak with a 9-0 win over the Citadel on Wednesday before beating Harvard 6-3," Princeton 5-4, Presbyterian 7-1 and Virginia Tech 9-0. The break had to be pleasing for the netters regardless of their sacrifice in beach time. They breezed past three of their foes and proved they were some better than the tough Harvard and Prince ion teams. International Week Offers Free Education In Sports By RUSTY CARTER DTH Sports Writer International Week at Carolina will include sports this year in an attempt to educate Americans in more events than football, baseball and basketball. The week-long festivities begin Friday and most of the weekend will be devoted to sports activity. Mark Packard, co-ordinator of the '1-Week' sporting events, said Wednesday that there will be an event every afternoon this weekend and the activities will be spread over campus so everyone can see at least one. "The idea is to get Americans to realize there are other sports played in other countries and in different ways," Packard said. The weekend will begin with a Saturday morning soccer game on Ehringhouse Field. An international side will face a team picked from UNC undergraduates. Saturday afternoon the UNC Rugby team, made up of many foreign students, will meet the University of Georgia side on Navy Field. This is one of the scheduled UNC meets but because of the number of foreign students participating it was chosen as part of the 1-Week games. Cricket will finish the weekend on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 on the intramural fields. Both sides will be fully international with most of the competitors coming from Commonwealth nations. As an extra event I Week is sponsoring an international tC0C COIA-AND "COKE- ARE REGISTERED TRADE-MARKS That group really gives you the t ? 1? - So fight ice with ice. None of the UNC performers lost more than two bouts during the spring break play. Lee Langstroth, playing number one, lost only to Presbyterian's Jimy Armaya 6- 4, 6-3. Fred Rawlings lost to Princeton's Win Irwin 1-6, 6-0, 7- 5. Joe Dorn, playing on the number two court, lost twice. His first defeat came from Harvard's Rocky Jarvis 6-2, 6-2 and on the following day he fell to Princeton's Richard Howard 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In the doubles competition the UNC netters lost only three matches during the fifteen matches. Corn and Rawlings played the number one spot against the Citadel and Harvard losing to the Crimson 6-4, 6-2. Coach Don Skakle then moved to Langstroth and Doug Crawford, who also lost to Harvard, into the number one court for the final three days. Neither duo lost again. The only other doubles loss came in the third court against Princeton. UNC's Dorn and Robert Tate lost 6-3, 12-10 to Rogers and Kayser. badmitton tournament Sunday night composed of teams primarily from the Far East countries. Packard mentioned Jehangir Khan, an outstanding criketer from Pakistan as one of the top performers of the weekend. (8h Lacrossers Host Fairleigh Dickinson By ANDY SCHORR DTH Sports W riter The lacrosse game that will be played on Navy Field at 3 p.m. Thursday should be a grudge match. That's when the stickman from Fairleigh-Dickenson will face their counterparts from Carolina. The visitors plan to reserve the outcome of last year's contest when they lost 9-5 and end up victorious this season. Fairleigh Dickenson has a 3-1 record so far this year having opened the season losing to Brown and then bouncing back and defeating Hartwick, Amherst and Harvard in the last two weeks. The Tar Heels now have a 3-2 record having defeated Towson State 7-4 and losing to Virginia 7-3 over spring vacation. Coach Shields of Fairleigh Dickenson believes Thursday's game should be an exciting one to watch and a close one. "We have basically the same team as last year when North Carolina beat us displaying some fine freshmen players. We won the two years before that, however, and we'd like to do that again." Coach Parker of the Tar Heels thinks the game should be a rough one too. "Fairleigh-Dickenson should be tough just as they have been in the past." A sometimes weak spot on the Tar Heel team, defense, Parker says is looking much better. "Against Virginia we played fine defense against a NEWLY OPENED TOPEKA TAVERN 414 W. Fairleigh-Dickenson Coach Shields recalled, "Last year when the Atlantic Coast Conference decided to let freshman play lacrosse it added some fine talent to the North Carolina team. The Team we played here last season was probably one of the best teams we faced all year." But probably the Carolina attackmen and midfielders will perform at their best knowing that the regular Tar Heel lacrosse fans are in the stands. Harper Peterson, Temple Grassi and Peter Brand play especially well when there is a friendly crowd cheering them on. They hope that will be the case for Thursday's game.
