He said James Forman, who presented the demands, was "hustling, begs ?gmg. of the A. Philip Randolph Institute said: "The idea of reparations is a ridiculous idea. If my great grandfather picked cotton for 50 years, then he may deserve some money, but he's dead and gone and nobody owes me anything. "Furthermore, I don't believe that any black man in this country wants to be given a thing, just the opportunity A 1 1 A to worK, to wont ana iaxe care of his family. "Forman may want someone to give him something," Rustin said, "but the average Negro is not a hustler. What he (Forman) is doing is hustling, beggin." Rustin, who organized the successful 1963 civil rights march on Washington, not only attacked Forman's "black manifesto," but the disruptive methods which Forman used at New York City's Riverside Church on Sunday to give the "reparation" demand muscle. "I think that any white churchmen who tolerate their services being disrupted are anti-liberation. It is a violation of civil liberties to do this and black people will suffer more than anyone else if civil liberties are violated." Last week, the outspoken Negro leader attacked black students who brought guns to Cornell University and others who employed violence to force college administrators to accede to their demands. In an interview with United Press International, the head John L. Sarratt has received the Most Outstanding Senior Award presented by Kappa Alpha Order in honor of Dr. William P. Jacocks. The award is given each year to the student who has "had an active part in serving the university and his fellow students while maintaining a 3.0 average." The recipient is selected by a student-faculty committee appointed by Kappa Alpha and the Dean of Men's Office. Sarratt is from Atlanta, Ga., and is a Morehead from Governor's Mansion Campers Arrested RALEIGH (UPI)- "This is public land, it belongs to all of us," said Emanuel Grant of Charlotte, who was one of five Negro men arrested Thursday for pitching a tent on the lawn of the governor's mansion. , "The governor has been vacillating for the past three weeks and we just decided to take things into our own hands," Grant said. The five were in jail in lieu of $100 bond on charges of trespass. Ten Raleigh policemen and a state trooper arrested them five meeting black peoples demands," Butterfield said. "Since the governor won't give us our rights we're going to take them," said Cooper. Negroes had used other forms of protest such as. blocking traffic on downtown thoroughfares last month. '. Z Wednesday, state SCLC leader Golden Frinks of Edenton was given a one-year jail term for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police said two teen-aged youths were part -of demonstrations blocking traffic minutes after they pitched and Frinks had put them up to Phillips-Exeter Academy. He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Beta Kappa, and Order of the Grail and the Order of the Golden Fleece. While in the political science honors program he has maintained a 3.9 overall average. During the last four years Sarratt has served as chairman of the Fine Arts Festival and treasurer of the Carolina Symposium. He has been on the Honors System Commission and the Chancellor's Commission on Teaching and the Curriculum. Next year Sarratt plans to study at Harvard Law School. The award was presented at a banquet at the Kappa Alpha House on Wednesday, May 7. Interested in itnerican History?
