Their first, win, against Ditfce, started out to be an easy roqt with eight straight wins in the first eight bouts. The Heels then lost their momentum and managed only to squeak by with l 15-12 victory. Although they never tied, the Devils did cut the lead to as few as two bouts. The deciding bout came in the final series of epee when Ben Brinsome nipped Barber of Duke by a 5-4 score. Individual weapon scores were: sabre, 5-4; epee, 6-3; foil, was the first defeat of the year for the foilsmen. The four outstanding performers were Bo McBee, 2-1; Bud Griscomej 24; Denver Haynesr 2-1 ; and "ChadHilt6iv 2-0. On Saturday the Fencers traveled to Virginia and met Virginia and V.M.I. Here the competition was a bit easier, and the Heels breezed through both teams UVa. by 19-8 and VMT hv 94-3 All three weapons turned in excellent performances as the foilsmen regained their strength and combined with the other two weapons for three scores of 8-1 . Against Virginia the weapon scores were: foil, 6-3; sabre, 7-2; and epee, 6-3. Chad Hilton, Bo McBee, Denver Haynes, and Charlie were all 2- and Jon Pavloff, Press Ruddell, and Bud Griscome were 2-0. Brad - Veslick also turned a good performance as he upset Steve Hatten of Virginia who was previously undefeated for the season. Carolina now competes in the SED-ACC Tournament on Saturday in Raleigh and will qend Tom Ruff and Haynes in toil, Bud Griscome and Bo McBee in sabre, and Jon Pavloff and Chad Hilton in epee.' RiCKETTS DTH Sports Writer Rugby time back to the UN campus this pat weekend and left the Carolina club with bittersweet feelings. The sweetness came on Saturday, as a mysterious, a!!-biack clad team from Nashville wandered into town for a post eclipse match, their most outstanding attribute seemed to be their combined weight as most of them sported rather large beer-fed bellies. Rugby being the order of the day both sides set to the task. From the beginning it was obvious UNC v. as the better of the two, two trys, one by Rickey, and another by G. Patterson opened the slaughter. Nashville bravely huffed arid puffed up and down Ehringhaus field as the UNC backfield ran and kicked at will, Carolina's scrum was put to some disadvantage as the sheer inertia of the opposing do j t - ' V "" u nrJ w n it MARCH Ms Discontinued designs Odds and ends o New car changeovers Used tires Whitewalls and Blackwalls Tubeless or Tube-type Over 1,000 to choose from 1 Y Ii a MASTER CHARGE yS t W ' f3t f ff p? ess. rnr n rar r h era I'm W " If ; ;j i i T- f" ff I i 111 1 ! At the Hal: ea b tain Coin Jeff coat rallied the UNC R-jggers with Lnother of his fine speeches saying I think we're in good shape, keep it up." This was quite a lot for the Taciturn New Zealander. Keep it up they did, Jeffcoat and Ricketts scoring trys, plus two penalty kicks gave UNC 22 points. Nashville's rotund Fullback, seemingly suffering from heat stroke went 2 for 7 on penalty kicks to give his team a feeble showing of 6 points. UNCs B team went after N.C. State in the second game and lost 9-3, George Butler, a brave but untried scrum Half scoring a try for UNC. Sunday brought the Duke Rugby club strutting onto Ehringhaus field, looking quite smug after their 20-6 clubbing of Caroling last year. PAY PL A n ! i u Things weren't to be. the same howeiei. UNC was weary from the day before, but determined. Things started off just as they were to continue for most the game UNC and Duke traded penalty kicks in the first half to make 3 each, but the scoring took second place to the effort by each side to seemingly wound or cripple the other side. Carolina would run deep into Duke territory Gra Patterson and Paul Hebert making break after break but the candle of hope burned only briefly as a duke scrum or line-out captured the ball and a timely kick sent the ball hurtling back downfieki. Frustration reigned, but Duke players were, falling left and right. Finally Jim Russell, a craggy giant of a forward at 6'6" bulled his way over the line for a try to put the visiting side up 6-3. Next week brings renewed hope to the Club as South Carolina comes to play two games next Saturday at two on Ehringhaus field. On the next day Lynchburg College will try to offer up opposition, both clubs are somewhat weaker than this week's opponents and a brighter weekend is anticipated. 7, ZDL i L 25 in Stoc!; 650sl3 Plus $1.78 Fed.
