II tLil If, .i .2 KoiccIitie EDGARTOWN, Mass -A whirlwind grand jury, which heard just four witnesses, ended its investigation without indictments Tuesday in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne in Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's car. The district attorney pronounced the case "closed." The 10 men and 10 women of the Dukes County grand jury, after deliberating three hours and 15 minutes, apparently found no evidence to indict Kennedy or others in connection with the 28-yearold secretary's death last July. , Hart's Wife Convicted WASHINGTON The wife of Sen. Philip A. Hart, D-Mich., and seven other defendants were found guilty Tuesday of violating government regulations during an antiwar demonstration at the Pentagon last fall. Each could be fined $50 and sentenced to 30 days in jail, but the U.S. Attorney's Office said it would not ask for jail terms. The defense attorney said he would probably appeal the convictions. Here! Held Suspect Ft. Bragg Green Beret Capt. Jeffrey MacDonald, under house arrest as a suspect in the bludgeon murder of his pregnant wife and two daughters, requested legal counsel Tuesday, the army said. The spokesman said MacDonald, a physician, has been releived of his duties as a preventative special iorces. ne was resincieu iu ins udtuciui uwicia kju w, base. The spokesman said investigators "don't rule out any other suspects." He has been assigned a 24-hour guard, who will escort MacDonald, 26, to mess halls and other necessary areas on the base. MacDonald claims, his wife, Colette, also 26 and about six months pregnant, and their daughters, Kimberly, 6, and Kristen, 2, were killed by three men and a blonde woman who chanted, "Acid is groovy, kill the pigs, hit 'em again." The information spokesman said MacDonald, a native of Patchogue, N.Y., was told Monday that he was considered a suspect in the murders. Carswell Vole Today WASHINGTON Today's showdown vote on Judge GrHarrold Carswell looks to be the closest on a Supreme Court nominee in almost a century with a very real possibility that Vice President Spiro T. Agnew will have to save him with a tie-breaking vote. CarswelPs Senate opponents claimed Tuesday they had the votes to deny him confirmation if they could pick up the vote of only one more uncommitted Republican. But Carswell's supporters disputed their head count. The possibility still existed that Carswell that would break a 48-48 p jn. EST today. A UPI poll showed 48 senators publicly or privately committed to vote against confirmation, or leaning that way, and 46 committed or leaning toward supporting his promotion. Murderers GUATEMALA CITY-Guatemala Tuesday pressed what it described as a relentless search for the brutal slayers of West German ambassador Count Karl Von Spreti. The body of the slain career diplomat was laid out in state at the palace. The Guatemalan army promised "harsh and fast justice" for the kidnap-murderers. But there was no immediate indication their capture was imminent and there were unconfirmed reports some foreign diplomats were considering asking their governments to transfer them to another office in Central America. New Cigarette WINSTON-SALEM-To end "erroneous" speculation, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Tuesday announced a new low tar and nicotine cigarette which the company said delivers full tobacco flavor. Reynolds said the new cigarette, Vantage, represents a "breakthrough." ' "Vantage will be lower in tar than 99 per cent of the cigarettes sold in the UuS. and lower in nicotine than 97 per cent, but in flavor delivery it will compare flavorably to the best selling filter brand on the market," said W.S. Smith Jr., Reynolds executive vice president. Keats is fashion news. Gant's latest. A flamboyant dress shirt with with a big, bold, wide collar. Ray Goad, whose family owns the 23-unit restaurant chain "Ray's," said the new business will be housed by an existing structure that is being remodeled. It will be called "RJ's" and is scheduled to open sometime in May. The restaurant will serve daily buffet luncheons and ?8 Positions are now open for resident assistants for next semester. Applicants for the first time may be juniors or seniors. Lynne Armstrong of the Dean of Women's office said the new counselors may be undergraduates or graduate students. ' Wil By Al Thomas Staff Writer The Chapel Hill Human Keiat ttions Commission released a report Monday warning of further . disturbances in the local high school if racial conditions were not improved. The commission made several recommendations, including the correction of deficiencies in communication and curriculum; the offering of more vocational studies; and the hiring of more black teachers. The commission, through its high school study subcommittee, began investigating racial problems at Chapel Hill High School in November after a severe outbreak of violence resulted in three injuries and more than $1,000 damage. . Lack of communication between students, teachers and administrators was considered by the commission as one of the major reasons for disturbances and alienation. ''Difficulties in communication are growing so severe at the school," the commission said, "that the learning atmosphere and the day to day operation is seriously damaged." The commission placed part of the blame of the communication problem on the school administration. "One major point of consensus, continued, the commission 'was the lack of 1 Ob en "We hope we can bring to Chapel Hill a medium-priced restaurant that offers the residents and the students truly good food in an atmoshpere that is both sophisticated and in step with what is happening," he said. The commission recommended that an experimental program of "inter-group conflict resolution" be established. Two groups would be formed, according to the plan, which would include people from every group connected with the school from the School Board to the student body. The groups would meet twice a week supervision of Watson, an psychologist in under the Dr. Eugene educational the UXC School of discuss Education, and inter-group communication in the school and the development of behaviors and attitudes. The commission made extensive curriculum recommendations, calling the school's current vocational training program for those not college-bound "the most glaring deficiency in the high school." Courses such as typing, auto mechanics, technical drafting and computer operation should be either added or extended, according to the commission. "The subcommittee was shocked to learn," the commission said, "how frequently' course offerings are not available to students who want them in the fields of art, drama and speech." The commission said more extracurricular activities, such as a photography or philosophy club, should be added and that a standing curriculum committee should continually assess and add to course variety. The commission also called for the study of establishing "special interest" homerooms. "Students would sign up for homerooms they would enjoy," the commission said, "such as monogram winners, those interested in journalism or for blacks and whites who would like to reverse the usual racial balance."
