U - to wMice By United Press International SANTA FE, N.M -President Nixon has called the 50 governors to the White House Monday to discuss "the disruption of peace, violence and potential violence throughout the nation," Gov. Raymond P. Shafer of Pennsylvania said Thursday. In making the announcement, Shafer, State Schools Are Shut A Over Georgia By United Press International ATLANTA Classes at all 27 state colleges and universities in Georgia were suspended for 83,000 students for the remainder of the veek Thursday in the wake of demonstrations at the j University of Georgia. J Two Georgia students filed suit, however, at Atlanta, site jof the campus, attacking the faction as unconstitutional and j depriving them of equal protection under the law. I In other late developments, : protesting students obtained a permit for a 7 p.m. march at Athens, and three students arrested in the Wednesday night demonstration were released on their own recognizance after first being placed under $15,000 bond each. Steve Barnes of Telfair County and William Moredock of York County, S.C., asked Supreme Court Judge James Barrow of Clarke County to enjoin; President Fred Davison of Georgia and the University System of Georgia from closing the schools. They contended that as paying students, they were being deprived of their property without due process of law and th'at only Gov. Lester Maddox had the right to close any unit of the university system. A hearing was set for Friday. une ill Open Wanted: people who are interested in other people and want to relate to other people. The above qualification is all that is needed to join a commune now being established near Chapel Hill for the summer and perhaps longer. Robert Roskind, who owns 12 acres of land with a lake and house, hopes to establish a commune for the summer to create an atmosphere where people can live together as a family. "The aim," Roskind explained, "is to get our heads together and to relate to each other." The rules of the commune are to be decided by the group, he said. Roskind said the A-frame house will be used as a meeting place and an eating place. Living, he said, will be in tents or under the stars. Hoping to collect about 30 to 40 people for the summer, Roskind asks that anyone interested in living in the commune to meet with him at Silent Sam Monday at 4 p.m. or to call him at 967-2171. Shafei said he had conferred with White House officials who authorized him to announce that Nixon would meet with the nation's governors at 1:30 p.rru Monday. Attendance at the GOP governors conference had Chancellor George L. Simpson Jr. directed presidents of the colleges and universities to close their institutions Friday and Saturday, saying the action was authorized by the system's governing body, the Board of Regents. His action followed similar moves at colleges and universities across the country in apparent efforts to head off violence stemming from the deaths of four Kent State University students in Ohio in a clash with national guardsmen and from U.S. involvement in Cambodia. The suspension announcement came at Georgia as 500-600 students heard leaders call for complete amnesty for three students arrested during a Wednesday night demonstration, for students to boycott classes and for a shutdown of the university. The three students, George B. Eckard, 19, Atlanta; William Roger Clark, 18, Augusta, and Gregory Alan Goslinc, . 18 Warner' Ttobins were charged", with criminal interference with government property and burglary and originally held under $15,000 bond each. George Parthemos, Georgia vice president, told the rally, however, he had "intervened" on behalf of the students and had the' bond reduced to $8,000 each and announced that suspension of classes, drawing cheers from the students. Parthemos held up his fingers in the "peace" sign and smiled broadly. At Columbus Thursday, about 150 of the 1,000 students at Columbus College demanded in a noon demonstration that President Thomas Y. Whitley have the American flag lowered to half staff in memory of the slain students. WThitley refused and the students later dispersed. Phil Lambert of the Student Mobilization Committee at Georgia State said plans for a memorial service in a downtown Atlanta park would go ahead as scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday despite the closing. Lambert said he expected students from Georgia to come here for the ceremony. Maddox, reached at Columbus, said he was one who suggested the suspension of classes. He said he felt the action was "regrettable" but the decision was "wise." Maddox said he opposed "taking over college buildings or property" but "if the situation should cause the state to lose one student's life we wrould never forgive ourselves." The Wednesday night demonstration at Georgia centered around the white-columned administration building which was invaded by about 50 students. OAT IIS! Monge dwindled because many chief executives had stayed home to cope with disorders brought on by U.S. involvement In Cambodia and the killing of four Kent State University students by National Guardsmen. Shafer said Nixon wanted to discuss with the nation's governors the current wave of violence and campus turmoil and possible ways to stop it. Gov. David F. Cargo of New Mexico had ordered the National Guard to protect the Republican meeting against student disruptions. But, Shafer cancelled the conference when only 13 governors showed up. "The present crisis must receive the highest priority attention by all governors," Shafer said. At a news conference, the Pennsylvania governor pleaded for all citizens to avoid violence to "make certain reason wins out over emotion." At the time of Shafer's announcement, the only governors present were A. Lindwood Holton of Virginia, Deane C. Davis of Vermont, and Cargo. Among those who stayed home because of campus violence in their states were Govs. William G. Milliken of Michigan, Francis Sargent of Massachusetts and Louie B. Nunn of Kentucky. "It's a shame all this campus . unrest had to happen right' now," Cargo said. He said the White House meeting was expected to deal exclusively with campus unrest. In 1969, Jones asked state permission to arm security guards with submachine guns but was turned down.
