Tuesday, May 1 2, 1 970 THE DAILY TAR HEEL n n t i V1 SLA C J 1 Runners Finish 4ih As Terps Breeze By Mark Whicker Sports Writer Maryland won the ACC track title in Raleigh again this weekend, and so effectively blocked out Carolina's field strength that the Heels came in fourth behind South Carolina and Qemson. The Terps had a total of 89, leading USC's 47, Clemson's 37, UNC's 31 and Duke's 30 points. Darryl Kelly was the only Tar Heel winner, qualifying for the NCAA's with a triple jump of 49'9". This ties the school record he set in indoor season. Usually Coach Joe Hilton can depend on the field men to win more events, but the Terps frustrated the Heels at every turn. Broad jumper Mike Neff got off a 24'1" effort to beat out Virginia's Jim Shannon and . Carolina's Hubert West, who' did well with 23'3". In the high jump, both Maryland's Joe David and UNC's Dave HiUiard did 6'8", but David won the title with fewer misses. jacK naniey repeated as ACC shot put winner for Maryland with a 57' heave as Carolina's John Jessup was second. The Terps went one-two in the discus, and Dave Reece of UM was second in the javelin, between awesome Roger Collins of Clemson (262 ) and Carolina's Charlie Gibson (228'). Gibson, along with Hilliard, Kelly and pole vaulter Rick Wilson, will go to the nationals in Des Moines, Iowa next month. Maryland's Buddy Williamson won the pole vault at 15'6", and UNC's Jeff Hilliker was second. , i-w.W' - South Carolina and Clemson mopped up in the sprints and hurdles. Josh Collins won both the 100 and the 220 for the Tigers, and South Carolina took both relays (Carolina was ht tha Inn Ctzvd Featuring, Fresh Baksd T "v... Maryland's John Bab captured the mile with a 4:C and Russ Taintor cruised to three-mile win with 13:47, new record. Larry Widgeon, school record time of 14:03.5 was good for fourth place. -Spooky Windup For Golfers By Mark Whicker Sports Writer Wake Forest's golfers juiced up by the returning ghosts of Arnold Palmer, Jack Lews, etc., swept the ACC golf tournament at Fox Fire Country Club in Pinehurst this weekend with a 707 total as Carolina and Maryland came in tied for second, at 736. The Tar Heels were in sixth place for a disastrous First day, but charged back into a fairly respectable place after a good day Saturday. Kent Engelmeier and Lanny Wadkins led the Wake charge on Friday with two-under-par 69s, and came in one-two for the tournament. After Engelmeier's 140 and Wadkins' 141 were teammates Mike Kallam, Logs Jackson and Steve Walker at 142, tied with Ronnie Smoak of South Carolina. Jack Hooks had the lowest Carolina score, going 74-70 for two - over overall. He was tied with Sandy Dillon of Duke and Rick Bendall of Maryland. Tom Byrd shot 71-74 for 145. Langstroth won the .championship singles flight by defeating Sarfraz Rahim of C.emson. 6-2, 6-2. Rawlings took the flight five title with a 6-3 6-8, 6-4 victory over the Tigers' Arthur Abbott.
