Attending UNC is a tradition for many
Tar Heel families, but most do not have
four sons and daughters enrolled here at
the same time.
The Lamar Youngs, Sr. of Shelby are
an exception. This year, four of the
Young's children-Bryan, Mike, Eugene
and Judie-are all on the Chapel Hill
campus.
The situation is exceptional for still
another reason; the students earned
nearly all the money for their room,
board, tuition and clothes.

student, graduated here in 1970 with a
degree in chemistry. Mike is a senior
chemistry major and twins Judie and
Gene are freshmen.
All say working has made them more
appreciative cf the opportunity to attend
school and has helped them in many
other ways. "It gives you a sense of
responsibility said Judie. Echoing the

Since their carry teens, the Youngs
hare worked ia their father's furniture
store and have performed various
maintenance jobs for their father's rental
property. Last rammer, Judie worked for
grandfather's insurance agency in Forest
City and Bryan managed the Elks Cub
pool in Shelby. Mike and Gene worked in
the furniture store.
"I wish I had had a job where I could
have helped others, Mike observed.
"But, I had to consider the money."
Both older boys are pleased with their
years at UNC.
"If you want an education, you can
get a top notch education here, said
Bryan, a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
"But is's not a high pressure school. It
puts you on your own, which I think is
good. American youth tend to be too
sheltered."
Mike likes the idea of attending a large
university. "You're confronted with so
many ideas, thoughts. I'm glad I've had
the chance to be exposed to all of this.
I'm a better person."
Bryan considered pursuing a Ph. D. in
chemistry, then decided on medicine. "I
followed the doctors around at home and
became familiar with their daily

Mike also hopes to attend medical

As freshmen, Judie and Eu?ece fir.d
the campus friendlier than they expected.
Also, both enjoy "beir.g on your own."
"There's a lot of studying," said Gene.
"But I like it. I like the chance to meet
new people." Gene may be the third
member of his family to major in
chemistry.
Judie's also impressed with the
friendliness of the campus, "I was
expecting everyone to be cold and
impersonal, to net care about me. But
I've found everyone friendly and
helpful."
The four Youngs shire many
interests-water sports, snow skiing,
music and tennis. All were members of
the Shelby swimming team. Judie is a
dancer and has taught ballet.
With their busy schedules, the four
Youngs don't spend too much time
together on campus. Bryan and Mike
share an apartment and Judie and Eugene
are living in Granville Towers. So there is
always a brother or sister close by.
