SHTi"lTrTn ? TO). Toni Karate Demonstration 11 1 ffemnmeire gib it Season's First Playmalcers Production "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." These words were spoken by Henry David Thoreau, a man of unswerving principle and personal courage. His story as a war resister, an individual against the Establishment, will be recounted tonight at the Haymaker's Theatre in 'The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail." The Haymaker production marks the Southern premiere of "TNT," as "Thoreau" has been nicknamed. Authors Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee ("Inherit the Wind," "Mame") have released their work through American Playwrights Theatre for off-Broadway performances exclusively. The plot centers around Thoreau as a critic of the Mexican-American War, at which time he refuses to pay a S2 war tax and is imprisoned. During the night, he draws on past memories: a refusal to pay for his Harvard diploma; rebellion against a school board over an issue of corporal punishment; guidance for a run-away slave to freedom; astonishment for the narrow minded world surrounding him. Thoreau's philosophy and actions may be history, but the situations are from 1970. Speaking on his life, Lawrence and Lee say, "He smelled the smog before we saw it. It smarted his soul before it smarted our eyes. He was the explosive spirit who addressed himself to the penis of our time with more power and clarity than most angry' young men writing about now. The challenging task of playing Henry David Thoreau has fallen to Malcolm Groome. a BFA Dramatic Art senior ai JSC. Leading roles such as Thoreau are not new to Groome. He appeared last year as Cocky in the Carolina Union production of The Roar of the Greasepaint-the Smell of the Crowd." This summer he appeared in the demanding role of Dionysus in "Dionysus Wants You," a new rock musical at the Folger Library' Theatre in Washington. D.C. He has appeared at the Carolina Playmakers in productions of "The Apple "Amen to i::d "Ta antis." "DrjcizLi" ariu tie.
