Virginia. It was supposed to he Homecoming, but a bad case of stage fright was had by all. The staging in muddy Kenan Stadium, the fickle lighting and the directing by the officials all contributed to the sense of uncase shared by the Halloween Saturday crowd of 32,500. UNC began with a comedy of errors that was closer to black humor as Virginia claimed a 1 5-0 first quarter lead. But the Tar Heels got over the jitters Volume 78, Number 41 C JoMey by Mark Whicker Sports Writer Wingback Lew Jolley had just caught two touchdown passes in.Carolina's 30-15 homecoming triumph over Virginia, but he wasn't popping any champagne corks. "It was my worst game so far," said the Forest City junior. "I felt that the first ' Virginia touchdown was my fault, and I was responsible for the second one too." f On UNC's second play from scrimmage, Jolley bobbled Paul Miller's pass and Russ Burda intercepted on the 30 yard line. Bill Troup hit Bob Bischoff for a Virginia touchdown on the next play. Jolley dropped another pass on Carolina's next series, but Virginia didn't score for another seven minutes, so maybe Lew was being too self-critical. But Jolley more, than redeemed himself with 1:35 remaining in the quarter. Miller hit him with a bullet at midfield and Jolley streaked down the sideline with the first Tar Heel score. He gave credit to the block of split end Steve Alvis. After Mike Craven kicked a field goal to -narrow the Cavalier lead to 15-9, Eugene Brown recovered a fumble on Virginia's 20. Again Miller went to Jolley, who made the reception on the five and tumbled in for Carolina's go-ahead score. "That was a perfect pass, though," said Jolley modestly. "I just turned around and it was there. If I hadn't put my hands up, I probably caught it with my face guard." Jolley has now caught 16 passes for four touchdowns and 291 yards. No player on the team felt more presure than redshirt sophomore Eugene Brown, replacing Judge Mattocks at defensive end. Brown recovered a fumble, closed the sideline route- to Virginia runners Jim Lacey and Gary Helman, and collared Troup for a 15-yard loss in the fourth quarter. , "I felt pressure to keep up the standard of our defense -to keep. our good defensive tradition," said Brown in the locker room. 3 Arrested by Mike Parnell News Editor Three persons were arrested after a disturbance at the Carolina-Virginia game Saturday. The disturbance attracted a crowd of 200 persons and, several Fights began but police quickly quelled the disorder. The three persons, including one student, were arrested during the third quarter of UNC's homecoming game, which the Tar Heels won, 30-15. The disorder began when a UNC fan was chased from the playing field by police. The fan had been leading cheers from the 20-yard line while the game was in action. Won0 sit II and ran up 30 points while holding the visitors scoreless the rest of the day. Cavalier Coach George Blackburn would hae liked refund for h;s afternoon' jntertainmen "We got tl:-. business today," he said. '"One conference coach reported an official as being a Homer... well, I saw five out there today." Blackburn said the officials, headed by referee Vincent Price, told him before the game they had been watching films of Virginia, and warned the Cavaliers "about things we were doing wrong." Apparently, in Blackburn's view, it was UNC that was guilty of undetected violations, however. Tar Heel Coach Bill Dooley, who had ..orial Freedom rolina, Sunday, November 1, eir Game9 "There was a lot replacing Mattocks, of pressure in however," said Brown, "because as everyone knows, he was an outstanding football player." Brown was a defensive safety at Maury High in Norfolk, but was switched to rover on the freshman team and moved to end while being redshirted. "At first, I was down about being held . over," explained Brown, "but now it's about the best thing that ever happened." The beleaguered defensive backfield redeemed itself today with three interceptions. John Bunting, Lou Angelo and Richard Stilley all intercepted passes in the last quarter. Anderson Dispute Taken Before Trustee Committee by Bill Pope Staff Writer Four students from the School of Social Work met Friday with the Visiting Committee of the Board of Trustees to discuss to reappointment of C. Wilson Anderson, dean of the School of Social .Work. Anderson was reportedly informed last summer by Provost J.C. Morros that he will not be recommended to a second five-year term as dean. Anderson's present tenn expires June 30, 1971. Students in the Social Work department say in a petition circulating on campus that "the dean was informed by the Provost that the reason for his lack of recommendation was the political embarrassment to the University caused by the employment of Howard Fuller and the attempted employment of Howard Lee, both of whom are black educators with social work credentials." Lee, the mayor of Chapel Hill, was offered a post in the Social Work department last fall, but it was overruled Erapits. At Game, Captured just behind the West Gate of Kenan Stadium, the fan was wrestled to the ground by police and handcuffed. Police reports said the disruptor was belligerent and refused to cooperate with officers. Thomas Miles, 28, of Hope Mills, N.C, was arrested and charged with drunkenness and assault on an officer. Walter Shytle, 26, of Chapel Hill, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Wayne T. Baker, 1 8, of Virginia Beach, Va., was arrested and charged with assault on an officer land interfering with officers. Baker was the only student arrrested. Police would not identify the original complained about the icuting alter last week's lo.s to Wake Forest, cor.lined himself to'praising the Carolina comeback after the nearly disastrous opening. "It was awfully good to vun one alter three straight loes." he said of the fifth Tar Heel victory in eight contests. "I told our players at half time that I thought we were a lot better than we have been showing lately, but that my opinion doesn't really matter much and we would have to prove it to Virginia. "We got turned around after the half and with Paul Miller doing an exceptional job, we got the momentum and didn't let them get it back." Dooley said the UNC defense "made things happen the way they are capable tor lit A 1970 Founded February 23, 1893 "Troup's the best quarterback we've seen all year," said Angelo, whose theft robbed Dave Sullivan of a touchdown catch. "He throws harder than anyone we've seen previously." Angelo credited defensive backfield coach Billy Hickman. "He's one of the reasons we win our games," he said. "He helped us with our adjustments in the middle of the week." "We proved we could do our job," stated Angelo. "A lot of people have been talking about us, and we can't say anything back to them. But today it was a helluva effort by the offense and defense." by the University. Fuller, head of Malcolm X Liberation University in Greensboro, taught in the department two years ago. Anderson said he was informed by Morrow orally June 31 that his term will not be renewed, but would not comment further on the matter. Morrow said on Oct. 19 that he has not made a recommendation, but will send one to the Chancellor later in the year. He would not comment Friday on the recommendation. The University regularly evaluates department heads at the beginning of their fifth year to determine whether they should be reappointed to a second five-year term. The students presented "the background of the dean's situation" in the 30-minute meeting with the Visiting Committee Friday. The Visiting Committee, which reports to the executive committee of trustees, at UNC once every two years for "anyone who requests an audience" with them. Five faculty members in the department of Social Work, says Miss Aquila, meet with Morrow on July 7 and fan who caused the disturbances. Police regained control of the situation about. fifteen minutes after it began but not until a crowd of about 200 persons had gathered behind the West Gate. The crowd at the West end of the stadium had noticed the police arresting and handcuffing the original disruptor and many of them ran to the scene. Several fights broke out before police regained control. Eyewitnesses to the disorder charged , police brutality and screamed "Stop the Pigs" and "Why are the Pigs beating him?" The disturbance went unnoticed by most of the crowd attending the game. of doing, causing fumbles and interceptions and coming up with some key tackles." in the third and fourth periods. The defensive unit, which had appeared disorganized in the first half, jelled behind the efforts of end Eugene Brown, tackle Bud Grissorn and halftrack Lou Angelo. ; Recovering two fumbles to set up a field goal and a touchdown in a UO-second span, the defenders came to life with the Tar Heels trailing 15-6. Grissom fell on quarterback Troup's bobble at the Cav 29 early in the third period. Ken Craven was called upon to kick a 21 -yard field goal minutes later when the Tar Heel offense stalled at the four. Following the ensuing kickoff. Brown grabbed l Dave Sullivan fumble, and Carolina had only 20 yards to go for another score. Miller immediately threw to wingback Lewis Jolley, and the Tar Heels had made 10 points in 10 seconds, good for a 16-15 lead. Tailback Don McCauley scored twice in the final period on runs of one and three yards as the sky, which had been alternately sunny and very threatening, seemingly caved in on Virginia. McCauley carried 33 times for 145 yards and ran his season total to 1,130 yards, breaking his school record of 1 ,095 set last year. While he and the Tar Heels "blew us out in the second half," as Blackburn said, the first quarter belonged to Virginia. Troup threw touchdown passes of 30 and nine yards and tossed another 42-yarder which set up Jim Carrington's 32-yard field goal. Split end Bob Bischoff pulled in the long TD aerial as well as the 42-yard heave. -Miller's 52-yard strike to Jolley provided Carolina's only first half points and came at a time when it looked like the Tar Heels were in for a repeat of the 1968 Homecoming debacle, which Virginai won 41-6. The Tar Heels begain to act like their early season selves, however, en route to a convincing third win in Atlantic Coast Conference play. For Virginia's Blackburn, it was a disappointing loss in-more than one way. It marked the end of a three game winning streak and, with his view of the officiating, led him to moan, "I'm tired of being a nice guy." Blackburn's Cavaliers face N.C. State next week while the Tar Heels get a respite in the form of V.M.I. , whom they slaughtered 61-11 last year. were reportedly told that "there was a considerable lack of confidence in Anderson on the part of the Board of Trustees and administration, and this reduced the effectiveness of the dean." "We told them we were distressed by the political and racial moves taken by Morrow not to reappoint Anderson," said Jimmy Hopkins, one of the students at the meeting. "We also told them that the students and faculty in the department had not lost confidence in the dean," Hopkins added. Hopkins said committee members told -the students public institutions are affected by politics. 'The committee said the trustees answer and obtain money from the legislature," Hopkins commented," and the University had to act to the political situations for these reasons." ' "We informed them," said Arthur Byrd, another student, "that it was irregular for Morrow to make an oral statement (about Anderson) when a written recommendation had not been made. "The only assurance they gave us is that they will report to the executive committee," committee," Byrd continued, "and the matter will be taken as seriously and objectively as possible." Four Social Wrork faculty members also met with the Visiting Committee Friday in support of Anderson. A petition of support was presented to Chancellor J. Carlyle Sitterson on July 20 with the signatures of 29 faculty members. ' Students in the department have distributed a petition on campus and are planning to contact social work departments at other universities in addition to the National Association for Social Workers. The petition had aboHt 400 signatures Friday, according to Betsy Aquila, spokesman for the students. The students had planned to introduce the petition in support of Anderson at last Thursday's meeting of Student Legislature. However, Student Legislature did not take up the matter, apparently because of an overloaded agenda. x S 3 vvycV 4 t- I w - i I i 5 I i Lewis Jolley (top) scores on a twenty -,; . - i.. ft ' i r ---.m-w . - r - .
