November 3, 1970 THE DAILY TAR HEEL Page Three acago Ueleashes Ehythinni by Bryan Cumming DTH Reviewer H,noen bef- Chicago came on e Halloween night, it was already the biggest show of the season: 14,000 tickets, sold out for two performances, and an anxious audience bubbling up its sounds of anticipation that echoed through the gym. Obviously the best was yet to come. The spectators, without reducing their noise, observed perfunctory courtesies toward the warm-up group, an interesting duo called Good News. A guitarist and (of all things) a cellist sang their sweet and bouncy tunes in a Simon and Garfunkel style. One can only admire the audacious orginiality of a back-up act which offers rhythm-and-blues riffs on the violoncello. As the Carolina Union President annouced the main attraction, seven scruffy musicians wandered out, tuned their instruments with a grin or two, and tore into their hard kinetic sounds. Chicago kept up a high energy level throughout the concert, enjoying themselves the whole time, and even found the energy for a rousing encore. For those accustomed to their records, Chicago must have come as a mild surprise. In a live performance, their music and their appearance are both even less formal than their albums might imply. Drummer Danny Scrap kin e, looking boyish without his mustache, wore a monitor headset to protect his ears from the volume. Guitarist Terry Kath, with wispy beard and Cockeresque convulsions, would have fit in at the Phi Delt beer drinking contest with his beer belly and football jersey. Chicago opened with Kath's revolutionary blurb, "It Better End Soon." The horn parts were muffled by the echo, but the changed of pace were too obvious to be missed. Parazaider's flute solo was provocative and impressive, while Kath's right hand flew across his guitar strings with astounding speed. Following with tunes off their first album, Chicago then spotlighted other soloists and vocalists: Lee Loughnane on a high trumpet ride, Peter Cetera singing in his shrill upper range. On these tunes, one of the paradoxes of Chicago became evident: the difficulty of pounding out THIS WEEK'S SPECIAL 22OFFON ALL DRUMSTICKS Open 10-6 Mon.-Sat. With a fabulous encore of "I'm a Man," Chicago devoted their late night energies to an infectious percussive experience. On this one, Chicago played so well that, according to one report, even oV Archie Copeland was seen tapping his foot backstage. 5c to 2c 133 ' 2 E. Franklin Above X. C.
