THE DAILY TAR HEEL ive Vi AVER'S SHOE REPAIR SERVICE Heel B-T earners Happiest Fellows Around November 4, 1970 ! 1 ; 1 i 1 f i I t f If if m The happiest football learners in these parts are the members of the Carolina squad who are so "gung-ho" they ride their coaches off the field on their shoulders after a victorious practice scrimmage. These arc the Tar I lee) uredshirts' players who are being held out of action this year, but who figure prominently in plans for the future. There are not many of them, only a dozen on the offense and a dozen on the offense -but they sure do hjve fun. They play their only games on Mondays and Thursdays in practice against the Carolina varsity reserves or Ireshrncn. There is no fantare. Only the coaches are spectators. But is it full-scale war just the same. "This is a very unusual group of young men," says Coach Bill Doolcy. "They are so enthusiastic over the sport that their spirit serves as a lift to our varsity regulars. After a recent scrimmage in which the B learners beat the freshmen, the B team players picked up their coaches Charlie Carr and Mike Horvat and rode them off the field on their Granville A Wins in "IntFamiuirals Cranville A pulled out a 13-7 upset victory over last year's all-campus tag football champions, Lhringhaus A Blue in intramural football Monday. Cranville A got into the scoring early with a long pass play to Johnston for a 6-0 lead. Later in the game, Ehringhaus A scored on a run by' Blalock with Larnhardt converting the PAT for a 7-6 Khringhaus A halftime lead. Several times in the second half, 1 hringhaus A punched the ball into Granville territory, but could not score. Then, Granville A blocked a punt and got the ball on the Ehringhaus three-yard line. One pass play later Brady scored for Granville A and Stewart converted. Ehringhaus A again pushed into Granville A's territory but could not score, thus Granville A won, 13-7. Granville A joined Granville B South, Aycock and Everett in the quarter finals Tuesday as Aycock met Everett and Granville A opposed Granville B South. In the Graduate league the winner of the Lab Retrievers-Law Blue game z Tuesday will meet the Barnes Burners tonight at 8:00 to decide the Graduate league title. Two routs highlighted quarterfinal games in the fraternity blue-white playoffs, with Phi Delta Theta Blue moving past Phi Kap Blue 46-0 and Beta White I blasting Sigma Nu White I 34-0. Both winning teams now advance to the semifinals. Phi Delt White II reached the semifinals by edging Phi Kappa Sig SOS 9-6. All the scoring occured in a rough first half, with both defenses taking over in the second half of play. DKE Blue eeked out Beta Blue in another close game, 8-6. Beta grabbed the lead at the end of the first half at 6-2 but couldn't stop a long DKE drive in the final period. After stumbling in the first half, Chi Delt White put together a fearsome attack and rolled over PIKA White 20-6. Chi Phi led only 7-6 in the initial half. In the other playoff game, Sig Ep Blue stopped a determined PIKA blue attack, 19-14. 11 3 The Intimate Art Gallery is pleased to announce the First showing of The Special Collection Original works of art by contemporary master E tchings, Uthographs, and wood engraving byjnp($ tftan,3Q, artists, insjpding&casso Chagall, Dali, Miro, Matisse, Dufy', Soyer, Friedlaender, Baskin, Buffet, Calder and many more. Ra Piff& FOR DELIVERY CALL 967 1451 5-10 pm Waldrop Wins State Individual Title by Mark Whicker Sports Writer Duke ran away with the state cross-country meet Monday afternoon in Raleigh, but Carolina freshman Tony Waldrop broke through in the last 300 yards to win the individual title. .Waldrop's time of 25:11 on the N.C. State course was a new state record. Coach Joe Hilton hopes his development will continue in next Monday's ACC championship here. "It should be a great race," predicted Hilton. "Waldrop showed up real well last week at East Carolina and I wasn't really surprised at his performance Monday." Just behind Waldrop were Bob Wheeler and Mike Graves of Duke. Other Blue Devils in the top ten were Roger Beardmore and Phil Wilson, finishing eighth and tenth. Duke beat second-place Carolina 34-78. with State third and East Carolina fourth. Gareth Hayes of State was fourth behind Wheeler and Graves, and UNC's Larry Widgeon ran 25:25 for fifth place. The Tar Heels couldn't bunch their runners anywhere near the leaders, however. Mike Caldwell, Mike Garcia and Pat Grady crossed the finish line in 23rd . through 25th places. "This was the first time Garcia and Caldwell had run in quite a while," said Hilton, "and they looked like their old selves." Widgeon, Waldrop, Hayes, Wheeler and Graves will 'fight a cache of Maryland stars for the conference individual crown next Monday. Charlie Shrader, the defending conference champ, and Russell Taintor are the top Terps, but there should be enough support behind those two to give Maryland another team victory.
