POW Petition Angel Flight, the hostess organization of the Air Force ROTC, and Arnold Air Society, an honorary group within the corps, collected 971 names on a petition last week urging the release of names of prisoners of war by North Vietnam. Laurie Parker, Angel Flight's operations officer, said the names were collected in only three days by members of the two organizations. Since the beginning of the war in Vietnam, almost 1 ,500 men are listed as POW or missing in action, while only 320 have been claimed as captured by the North Vietnamese. According to the petition, the North Vietnamese Government signed the agreement prescribing treatment for prisoners, but have not honored it. ' A group of students, faculty, and townspeople have begun an experimental Christian worship service on campus and. if the experiment is successful, may establish a new church in Chapel Hill. Fifty-four persons attended the first service in Gerrard Hall last Sunday. Services are planned for each Sunday morning at 9:15 in Gerrard Hall, followed by a Sunday school. "It's not just another campus group," Dr. Paul Dunham, a UNC professor and one of the service's organizers, said. "We're interested in a full church program." The experimental services and the - proposed church are non-denominational. Planning for the services, which began a month ago, were "spontaneous," Dunham said. The Rev. Edward Henegar, pastor of Blacknall Presbyterian Church in Durham, is acting as guest speaker until " December. At the end of this "trial period," Dunham said, the people participating in the experiment "will take a more formal look" at setting up a new church. Dunham cited common bonds of belief, greater convenience and the need for more involvement in church life as among the reasons the services were begun. Many of the participants in the Sunday program have been attending Blacknall Presbyterian Church in Durham. A month ago, Dunham said, several people who had expressed a desire for a new Chapel Hill Church began to meet to set up the present experiment. Dunham acted as a "sparkplug" for the group and helped coordinate the experimental services. "Those who come will decide what they want these services to be," he said. "We don't have any 'leaders' now. It's loosely organized by design. "We're not presupposing anything but a lot of people are interested. It looks like the experiment has a good chance to be successful." 406 W. Main St. Carrboro, N. ILi-INOIS f'ISI Jobless Rate Rises WASHIN'GTON-The auto strike helped push unemployment to neurh -seven-year high of 5.6 per cent of the labor force in October, dumping r!0.00A factory workers on the street, the government reportedFridjy. The White House, which softpedaled bad economic news during the election campaign, took pains to place full blame for the latest boost in the jobless rate o-i the seven-week-old strike against General Motors. Press Secretary Ronald Ziegler noted, too, that the jobless increase from 5.5 per cent in September was much lower than Democratic National Chairman Lawrence F. O'Brien's pre-election prediction of a "disastrous" figure approaching 6 per cent The. Labor Department stood on its heated denial of O'Brien's charge th at th October figures were deliberately delayed until after the Tuesday balloting. It said the Nov. 6 release date had been scheduled for more than a year. Italy Recognizes Red China ROME-Italy announced Friday it was establishing diplomatic relations with Communist China, the second major Western Nation to do so within a month. Nationalist China reacted by severing formal ties with Italy. The two governments said they would exchange ambassadors within three months. Canada established diplomatic relations with Red China on Oct. 13. A joint statement issued in Rome and Peking after more than 21 months of negotiations said Italy recognizes mainland China as the only legal government for China. But Italy only "took note" of Peking's claims of sovereignty over Taiwan following Canada's example. U.S. Snubs Soviet Reception WASHINGTON-U.S. officials deliberately snubbed a major Soviet diplomatic event Friday to demonstrate their irritation over continued Russian detention of two American generals and a major. Even reports from authoritative Moscow sources that the three, along with a Turkish officer, would be released early next week failed to diminish the vexation of the secretary of state and other high administration officials over the incident. They symbolized this by boycotting the Soviet Embassy's reception Friday in celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the Russian Revolution. The State Department announced that Secretary of State William Rogers would be in New York City to receive a United Services award rather than attend the embassy social event.
