November 19, 1970 Hard-Hitting Ray Anchoring Defense by Ken Tilley Special in tin- irm Most teams which have faced Carolina on the football licit! this fall will agree that one of the Tar Heels strong points is the hard-hitting defensive line. A leader on this gung-ho defense is I lip Kay, a prime contender for All-ACC selection. Coaches rate Flip as the best defensive tackle in the conference as well as one of the finest in the South. Opposing runners who have tried to penetrate the right side of the Carolina defensive line would probably second, the coaches opinions Flip Ray is lough. From his anchor position in the defensive line, the 6-3, 245-pound giant sheds blockers and smothers running backs who venture into the middle. Ray and fellow tackle Bud Grissom jam the inside rushing lanes, forcing opponents to seek other routes for moving the ball do.vn the field. Carolina's defense against the run leads the conference for the second straight year, with the Tar Heels allowing only 95 yards on the ground each game. This mark also puts the UNC defense among the stingiest groups in the nation, ranking eighth in rushing defense. Carolina's defense derives great pride from these figures, Ray admits. A shut-out and a win are two goals the defensive players aim for before each game. "After all," Ray observes, "if we hold a team scoreless, the worst we can Cpoo R RICHARD FIRST ANN I (Belated SALE THRU NOW25 1 For details - see TIRED OF WALKING? . 6-OR LOW.COSnu" TRANSPORTATION HONDA - BMW - DULTACO - KAWASAKI Open PROFESSIONAL til 4 I XT... - The HUB can now offer you the most complete selection of suits, and most of them will cost you under a c-note. As more and more teams take to the air in an attempt to penetrate the UNC defense, the Carolina pass rush becomes vital. Ray and Grksom team with the Tar Heel defensive ends in putting pressure on the quarterback who drops deep to throw the ball. "If we can get to the passer and hurry his throw," Ray explains, "our defensive backs can do a better job covering the receivers. Against Clemson we broke through several times, knocked down a few passes, and forced the Clemson quarterbacks to throw four interceptions." Ray, a senior from Fort Mill, S.C., closes his college career this Saturday against arch-rival Duke. How does he view this grudge match? "Last year's loss plus a chance to spoil their chances of a conference championship add incentive to the normal rivalry between the two schools. And if we beat Duke, we will have a 16-15 record over the three year period during which the present seniors have played. We'll be ready for tljem. It means a lot to us." The season has been good for Flip Ray and the Carolina defense. A win Saturday against the Blue Devils and their explosive offense would be the ideal way to show that Flip Ray and the Tar Heel defenders are worthy of conference honors. TAR HEEL Garrett Finds Niche by Mark thicker Sfrr$ Writer -The regular season career of Richard Garrgii. -4a Wagon Wheels. er.J Saturday when Duke invades Kenan Stadium. Garrett's the one who went out tor football in his sophomore year after playing baseball and basketball, weighs only 1 70 pounds but considers the special teams as "fun." and has intercepted passes in the last two games. ' "Wagon." who plays behind Richard Stilley at safety, will spend Saturday face-to-face with the conference's alltime leading pass catcher. Wes Chesson. "He's got good hands, speed, and finds the open spot well," Garrett says. "Of course, he's got a pretty good man on the other end in Leo Hart." He's not looking for a place to hide, though. "This is a pretty mature ball club," he explains. "We don't yell or -run around like we're up for a game, but we just go out and try to do it. We have to get ourselves ready." Like most of the other Tar Heels, Garrett was mystified by Carolina's shoddy performance in last year's 17-13 upset loss at Duke. "I'm kinda superstitious before a game," he says, "and last year we got caught in a traffic jam going over there. We had to wait about 45 minutes. "You're so anxious to play that you get frustrated waiting around like that. That's about the only explanation I can give, other than overconfidence, perhaps." Garrett has been the smallest man on the team since Rusty Culbreth was hurt in the State game. He's been returning punts in recent games, and doesn't consider life on the suicide squads as bad as its reputation.
