Tuesday, Dece I, 1970 All-AGC volter TTT air it J I V r Dooley, Hoolahan angry 13 V By Chris Cobbs Sports Editor This year's All-Atlanta r Conference football team lists only three members of Carolina's Peach Bowl-bound lar Heels-and Coach Bill Dooley is very unhappy about the situation. "It's a mystery to me how the newsmen can vote only three of our Players on an all-star like this while picking six Wake Forest and five Duke men," said the Tar Heel coach. Only UNC representatives on the squad, selected by 83 members of the ACC Sports Writers Association, are tailback Don McCauley, offensive tackle Paul Hoolahan and defensive tackle Flip Ray, all seniors. "We felt like we finished the season stronger than any other team in the conference, " said the irate Dooley. "What's more, we led the ACC in rushing offense, total defense and rushing defense." The Tar Heel boss was unhappy that only one member of both the offensive and defensive lines was included on the all-star team, in view of the statistical domination achieved by these forward walls. Missing from this year's all-star is guard-linebacker Bill Richardson, honored for his play as a junior in 1969 Crossword Puzzle ACROSS 6 Witty remark 7 Persian fairy 8 Deprave 9 A state (abbr.) 10 Combining form: bad 11 Break suddenly 16 Above 18 Anger 20 Abstract being 22 Yelled 25 Afternoon party 27 Sea eagle 1 Carpenter's tool 4 Moist 8 Obstruct 11 Identical 12 Century plant 13 Guido's high note 14 Greek letter 15 Large cask 17 Pertaining to a tribe 19 High card 21 Footlike part 23 Man's name 24 Shut up 26 Pronoun 28 Brother of Jacob 31 Ocean 33 Native metal 35 Bitter vetch 36 Conjunction 38 Brought into harmony 41 Pronoun 42 Click beetle 44 Make lace 45 Illuminated 47 Winglike 49 Roman bronze 51 Girl's name .54 Nothing 56 Lair 58 Through 59 Sell to consumer 62 Energy 64 A continent (abbr.) 65 Fruit drink 66 Boundary 68 Bad 70 Marry 71 Rip 72 Number DOWN 1 Dressing for fishing 2 Part of "to be' 3 Damp 4 Europeans 5 Man's nickname 29 Limb 30 Employ 32 Unit of Siamese currency 34 Lamprey 36 Girl's name 37 The sun 39 Chinese pagoda 40 Performed 43 Raged 46 Cover 11 15 19 20 21 24 25 31 32 36 37 38 42 43 44 47 48 54 55 59 60 65 66 70 71 Distr. by United HELLO. "I think this points up the need for a new voting system," continued Dooley. "Something has got to be wrong when players the caliber of Richardson don't make the team. "We thought that both Richardson and another of our linebackers, John Bunting, were as good as any linebackers in the conference." Named as the all-league linebackers were Duke's Dick Biddle, Wake Forest's Ed Stetz and N.C. State's George Smith. Stetz, ringleader in the Deacon defense, was joined by tackle Win Headley as representatives of the Wake defensive platoon. Other members of the conference champions chosen for all-conference recognition were quarterback Larry Russell, fullback Larry Hopkins, guard Bill Bobbora and kicker Tracy Lounsbury. Duke players cited in addition to Biddle were end Wes Chesson, quarterback Leo Hart, and safety Rich Searl. "I am sorely disappointed at the writers' choices," said Dooley. "I don't understand how you can omit senior linemen like our Tony Blanchard, Keith Hicks, Ron Grzybowski and Jim Hambacher from strong consideration," he went on. Liberty Bowl scouts wanted Carolina to delay their decision until after the LSU-Tulane game Saturday night, but Rice accepted the Peach bid, setting up a meeting with undefeated Arizona State in Atlanta December 30. Although LSU beat Tulane, the Liberty Bowl invited the Green Wave anyway. "We felt that is we made any delays,.' assistant coach Vic Spooner said, "the Peach Bowl might invite somebody else. "You would certainly think that Richardson would be picked again, since he made the team last year and had such a great season this year. T played against Ed Stetz of Wake Forest and I don't really respect him that much, although he got a big buildup from the coaches over there. i know one of our guards should have made team, without question, but the political strines apparentlv kept them off it." It proved to be the right decision. Head Coach Bill Dooley had told each coach to contact the players beforehand to get their reaction to possible bowl invitations. All the players voted affirmative on Friday. However, some of them reportedly had second thoughts about waiting until the end of December to make the Atlanta trip. The Liberty Bowl will be played December 12, a week from Saturday. "The Peach Bowl is a good game, and Atlanta's a good town to play in," said all-ACC tackle Paul Hoolahan Monday afternoon. "But I understand some of the players would have rather gone to Liberty Bowl because the season would be over quicker. "A lot of us have been falling behind on our work in school, and so we wait until the season's over to get in our Sunday punch with the books," Hoolie continued. "We've been working in this direction since we w ere all sophomores." Second-string tackle Reid Lookabill felt that the Dec. 30 game would help him in completing his schoolwork.
