Guillermo. one of two students here from Colombia on the UNC end of the exchange, described Medellin, where the university is located, as the "place of eternal spring" (year-round temperature averages 72-76 degrees). The campus is located in the center of the city which boasts a million and a halt inhabitants. There are 13,000 students in the university which first opened this new campus in 1967. Guillermo explained that since the university is new it is modelled after American counterparts. Basically the academic system is the same as that of Carolina. The great part of the exchange, said Guillermo, is the cultural and political lesson available to the gringo. An exchange student has the opportunity to know "a new environment, people, culture and different life style," he said. One big difference Guillermo points out between his country and the United States is that Colombia is less mature politically. Because of this immaturity, he said, there are all types of political groups on the Antioquia campus. In the Medellin area Guillermo said trips into the countryside are easy and cheap. There is skiing in the nearby mountains which surround the valley town. Sports, except American football, are readily available. There are approximately 200 foreign students at the University of Antioquia coming from South America, the United State and Europe. There are about 15 American students.
