Coach Pat Earey's UNC swimming
team finished its regular season Friday
afternoon with a 63-50 victory over East
Carolina. The win gave the Tar Heels a
7-5 record for the regular season.
"It was an excellent performance with
which we can be pleased," commented
Earey after the meet. 'The attitude of
the team couldn't have been better."
Carolina took an early 7-0 lead by
winning the 400-yard medley relay with a
team of Butch Bristow, Mike Eddy, Jim
Osborn and Phil McMunigal.
Gerry Chapman followed with a
victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle that
Earey termed "the key to the meet."
Chapman's winning time of 10:13.6 was
his best of the season.
Gary Frederick of East Carolina won
the 200-yard freestyle with a time of
1:49.8, but Jike Southard and Bob Nagle'
grabbed the second and third places to
give the Tar Heels a 1 7-8 lead.
Pirate Paul Trevisan took first place in
the 50-yard freestyle, and was followed
by Carolina swimmers Glenn G are 11a and
Bruce Wigo. .
The 200-yard individual medley was
won by Wayne Morris of ECU in a time
of 2:02, while Carolina's George
Schiaffino grabbed the runner-up slot.
East Carolina shaved the Tar Heel lead
to 27-25 as Jack Morrow and Mike
Emerson took first and third place,
respectively, in the one-meter diving. Tar
Heel senior captain Chuck Humphrey,
diving competitively for the last time in
Chapel Hill, finished second.
Dave Bedell won the 200-yard
butterfly with a 1:57.1 time, which was
.9 seconds below the NCAA . qualifying
mark. Teammate Jim Osborn finished in
the runner-up slot to give Carolina a
35-26 advantage.
Wigo and Garella combined to sweep
the first two ..places in the 100-yard
freestyle, while McMunigal and Chapman
followed with a one-two finish in the
200-yard backstroke. At this point
Carolina led, 51-28. .
ECU's Jim Griffin took the 500-yard ,
freestyle, but Rich Williams and Eddy got

The UNC Rugby Club starts its
preparations for the spring season in
earnest today with a scrimmage at 12
noon on Ehringhaus field.
The season begins for the ruggers next
weekend when UNC travels to South
Carolina in an attempt to avenge a defeat
suffered at the hands of the Gamecocks
last fall.
The following day, the Naval Academy
brings its strong team to Chapel Hill to
test the UNC side. The game with Navy is
a recent addition to the Carolina schedule
and is bound to provide the club with
excellent competition.
Carolina's season promises to be one
of' the finest. UNC will play home
matches with VMI, Georgetown,
Richmond, Duke and Ivy League
champion, Yale.
The club's away matches will include
South Carolina, Atlanta, N.C. State, a
tournament at Washington & Lee, and the
Duke Seven's tournament.
The inclusion of Navy and Yale will
give the club a chance to show the calibre
of Southern Rugby when pitted against
the more entrenched Northeastern sides.
UNC has had outstanding success with
such teams before.

The North Carolina Big Seven indoor
track meet this afternoon will give Tar
Heel Coach Joe Hilton some answers
about what to expect next week in the
ACC meet.
Duke and State have strong
competition in distance events, while
North Carolina Central has its usual
arsenal of sprinters.
But the Tar Heels finally get their top
performers back from all-star meets in
O
Last spring they trounced Toronto,
and soundly defeated Rutgers and Penn
State.
The club's only big loss to
inter-regional opponents came at the
hands of Notre Dame in the
Commonwealth Cup tournament. Notre
Dame was ranked fourth nationally,
Carolina being the only college team to
score a try against the strong Notre Dame
side.
UNC will again feature its fast offense
and a thrilling kick-oriented defense. The
back line owns strong and sure foots in
Ben Porter and Doug Swaim.
Des Cannon will give the backs a
break-through threat, as well as
contributing a fing drop kicking ability.

all turned in 63 tines this year, and there
are almost a dozen 6.4 men, L-dudin- the
Tar Heels Mike Canzorneri and Har.k

Tom Van Buren, one of Wake Forest's
few contenders, also has a 6.4 to Sis
credit.
The 1, 000-yard dash will (ezfcis a
duel between two of the top freshmen in
the conference: Duke's Bob Wheeler and
UNCs Tony Waidrop.
Wheeler won the 1,000 at Louisville's
Mason-Dixon games last Saturday with
2:0S.2. Waidrop, as far as Hilton knows,
has never run a 1,000, but he has been
tough at anydistance.
East Carolina's Jimmy Kidd and
Duke's long-haired Fhil Wilson will
contest Wheeler and Waidrop for the top
prize.
Carolina should have an edge in-field
events. Jessup, for example, has a school
record of STMT. His only competition
should come from Ed Bradley of Wake
and bob Shankweiler of Davidson.
ECU's Walt Davenport was injured in
the VMI Relays earlier this month, but if
he's healthy he can make things
interesting for Kelly in the triple jump
and West in the broad jump.
Jim Malone of ECU and Davidson's
double entry of Abberger and Rogers will
contend with West.
The high jump should be close. UNCs
Charles Ball, State's Henry Edwards, and
Duke's Bryan Blackwelder all have
jumped 6'4".

Jesse Edwin Davis is a Kiowa Commanche fom Oklahoma. His
remarkable guitar can be heard on all of Taj Mahal's albums, and
as of next week, on his own Atlantic album, "Jesse Davis." His

Through his Washita Productions he is producing Roger

Jesse was fortunate. He was born into a loving, strong family

He is a warm, together person who has succeeded on his own

Duke's Jeff Howser did not run in

Ken Stapleton of NCCU won in the

Carolina's Reid Hilton has a 7.9.
State freshman Jimmy Wilkins has the
inside track in the mile run, with a best
time of 4:10. Carolina's best entry is
Mike Garcia, while ECU boasts Joe Day.
Widgeon and Duke yearling Mike

State's Gareth Hayes pulled up with a

All the teams will take a back seat to

are confident that they can make the
