The Dslhf Tar Hes! 5 1 Eomftrmnhri 7 Hurts pennant hopes I leads netters to Tennessee 2 Thursday. April 23. 1371 TO) rv n IBS 10 by Bruce Gurganus Sports Writer Sacrifice is a word that is very much overused by slow thinking football coaches and haranging politicians. But a sacrifice is exactly what Coach Don Skakle's tennis squad will give as they miss Jubilee in order to compete in the Tennessee Classic this weekend at Knoxville. . Leading the Tar Heels into their first tournament action of the season, and a good warm-up for the ACC tourney, will be freshmen Richard McKee. With a season, and career, record of 17-0 McKee has completely dominated all of his competitors at the number four position. But the tournament competition this weekend will be nothing new to the highly experienced McKee. Richard, whose father is a tennis pro, has been playing tennis tournaments since he was eight years old, and with quite a bit of success. In fact he has had such great success that he is presently ranked number two in men's singles in his home state of Virginia just behind former ACC champ Bobby Heald. McKee is ranked number one in doubles along with former UNC great O.H. Parrish. While playing at Thomas Jefferson High in Richmond, alma mater of such Carolina net greats as Parrish, Bitsy Harrison, and Tom Chewning, Richard won three straight state singles championships. He is the only player in Virginia history, including Arthur Ashe, to turn that trick. This year McKee has been playing d o u b 1 es with AU-American Freddie 5 5 1 f J I' . V f j n. nT - McNair. They have compiled a 15-2 record, identical to the team mark, while playing some tough competition on the first court. Their only losses have been an early season upset by the Michigan tandem, whom they had;beaten earlier, and a three setter to Miami's top duo. Their narrow defeat at Miami was at the hands of Luis Garcia and Eddie Dibbs, who many consider the nation's top college doubles team. McKee and ' his sophomore partner have easily blasted all their ACC opponents and are certain to be the top seeded entry in the conference tourney. In one of the understatements of the sporting year, the modest McKee described his style of play as "aggressive." Perhaps, the strongest part of his all around complete game is his volley. He likes to follow a good, first serve or an effective approach shot to the net where he takes command with his quickness and accurate volleys. Coach Skakle, the mastermind of Carolina tennis, commented recently that Richard's game "gets stronger with every match." In reference, to the McKee-McNair . doubles combo, Skakle said, 'They're just beginning to click as a team." With that kind of praise coming from the usually reserved Skakle, it's hard to imagine how good things will be for Carolina tennis in the next few years. As McKee said softly, "We could be stronger next year." ,. Friday morning McKee and his fellow Tar Heels play one of their most demanding matches of the season. They play the University of Georgia in the first round of the Classic. 'V 'f - it V ' x :v ... ' f X ! t N, 4 .zr.. , . - v " ' . 1 V ' : -XJ' I . ' ' V I ! Lcs Georgia, the champions of the Southeastern Conference, has a cumber of nationally known players including Danny Birchmore, Norman Holmes, Marc Shapiro, and Carey Browder. McKee will probably play Browder, who was beaten by McKee in the National Junior Championships at Kalamazoo, Michigan last summer ; The Heels will also be going against the University of Tennessee and Southern Illinois in the Tennessee Classic. McKee and McNair are expected to have a close match with Birchmore and Holmes for the top doubles spot. Skakle has had the Heels working out on the hard courts all week in preparation for the tourney. Following the Classic, the netters return home Monday for a match against George Washington. Leading GW this year has been Jon Damon, who transferred there from UNC. Commenting on his own play this season, as well as the team effort, McKee said simply that he is "really satisfied and it feels good to win." 4 ALL YOU CAW EAT AT JOE'S 3-12 FRIED CHICKEN COLE SLAW & FRENCH FRIES $1.50 DRAFT BEER $.75 PITCHER 5-9 pm -n H ' J 0 . f? ! Ga. 4 i Carolina's hopes for an ACC pennant were dampened Tuesday afternoon when Sammy Beale's two-run homer pushed Virginia to a 5-4 victory over the Tar Heels in Charlottesville. . UNC is now 6-4 in the conference and 11-13 overall. Maryland leads the ACC with a 4-1 record, with the Cavaliers in second at 4-2. The Tar Heels played Maryland in College Park Wednesday and will entertain South Carolina at Durham Athletic Park Saturday. Beale smacked his third home run of the season and boosted his league-leading RBI total to 26 with his 400-foot home run off Carolina righty Dave Bullard. The blast scored Mike Cubbage ahead of Bullard and dealt UNC its second one-run defeat. The Tar Heels lost to Maryland 9-8 Sunday in Durham. Bullard went the distance, allowed seven hits and struck out five.
