Wednesday, Sept: 2. 1971 The Daily Tar Heei Mind o is Sym P e South' osium topic by Lou Bonds Associate Editor The Carolina Symposium will expand its format this year to present "Mind of the South: The Southern Soul." Claiborne Jones, a symposium organier, said the program has been expanded from the usual four-day program of the past and will present 1 1 days of speakers, exhibits and music on March 20-31. The Carolina Symposium alternates - jry other year with the Fine Arts Festival. I he Symposium, titled "Man an J the Fnvironment," featured speakers j'.h as f-.dmund Muskie, U.S. senator from Maine, and Stewart Udail, former Secretary of the Interior. Miss Jones said she hopes to line up a greater number of speakers and offer a more varied program for the 1972 symposium. In presenting the southern theme, the symposium will trace the history of the South through culture and art. Southern folk culture will be represented by fiddlers, banjo players, Jokirner players and other musicians typical of the region. Miss Jones said few formal invitations have been extended to speakers and artists at this point, but she mentioned names of those "I would very much like to have come.'" Of the folk culture category, she icirned "Voices Incorporated" as a group he plans to invite. "Voices Incorporated'" is a black group from Harlem that depicts the history of soul music in concerts. "We are definitely interested in having the North Carolina School of Arts come," she said. T he Arts School has developed a ballet interpretation of southern author Willia m Faulkner. Charles Kuralt, CBS television commentator of the popular series "On the Road" has been scheduled as "definitely coming." He will lecture and 'how excerpts of "On the Road" films taken in the South. Miss Jones related she would like to h ive southern authors participate in the symposium. She named Robert Penn Warren. Walker Perry. Fldora Welty and 1 r u man Capote as possibilities. She named poets James Dickey and Allen late as possible candidates for m itation also. C. Vann Woodward, a southern historian , Frank Smith, head of the J ennessee Valley Authority program, and Vernon Jordan, head of the Urban League, are also possible speakers. Other areas being investigated as possibilities are a intercollegiate seminar whi.h would have southern college students meet at the symposium to discuss problems of that age group. During the two week symposium program, the La Mar Society, a group of southern law makers, has scheduled their annual meeting to be held in Chapel Hill. Miss Jones said she is interested in having southern governors enlisted as speakers from the La Mar Society. The Carolina Symposium is funded by Stud end Government appropriations, Student Union grants and donations from dormitones, fraternities, sororities and various foundations.
