The Daily Tar Heel Friday, December 3, 1971 B by Dan Collins Sports Writer Impressive is the only word to use after a first glance at the 1971-72 freshman basketball team. The Tar Babies rolled to an easy 97-5 1 victory over the East Carolina freshman squad, with the only disappointment being they didn't reach the century mark. The game was never in doubt with Another goof A DTH composing error in the basketball "Insight" Thursday has misled some students. In Al Thomas' article on Dennis Wuycik, the last paragraph read, "He undoubtedly had a lu:rative future awaiting him in basketball, but now all he seems concerned with is winning." That should read, "He undoubtedly HAS a lucrative future . . ." Apologies to Dennis Wuycik and all who may have been led astray by the fickle composers. But everyone makes mistakes. Imwmmm SAGITTARIUS, NOV. 23-DEC.21 aMe Mast Carolina outshooting, outrebounding and outhustling the smaller Pirates. Forward Don Washington was the big man for the Tar Babies, leading the team in scoring with 21 points. The 6'8" Washington, D.C. native also grabbed 12 rebounds and intimidated East Carolina with several blocked shots. Center Ed Stahl, from Columbus Ohio, led all rebounding with 15, and accounted for 10 points, mostly from layups and tap-ins. Conerman Craig Swanson f6'8") also contributed to the Carolina domination of the boards by grabbing 10 rebounds. The Merrick, N.Y. native hit double figures in scoring with 10 points. The statistics will show that the Tar Babies clearly won the battle of the boards as they ended with 63 rebounds while the Pirates could manage only 27. The back-court play for Carolina was outstanding with Ray Harrison, from Greensboro, N.C., and Brad Hoffman, a high school teammate of Stahl in Columbus, impressing everyone with both their pinpoint passing and sharp outside shooting. Harrison ended the game with 15 points while Hoffman had 14. Sagittarians are good-vibes people. And Schlitz down well with Sagittarians. Because Schlitz is Taurus, the Bull. You say whatever you think, and sometimes you can be pretty blunt Despite the fact that you're plain spoken, people like you because you're gifted with bright optimism and an uncanny intuition. And there's nothing you like better than sharing your ideas with friends. Your ruling planet. Jupiter, gives you a lively, almost compulsive interest in people. And people sharing good times is what Schlitz Malt Liquor is all about. You always introduce your friends to the Bull, because he's got the stuff you admire. Sagittarius and the Buli-you're both brave, bold, and proud. Nobody makes malt liquor like Schlitz. Nobody. Hoffman proved to be a big favorite for the fans. He kept the crowd on its feet with his helter-skelter type play on both offense and defense. He clearly intimidated the slower East Carolina guards with his ball-hawking and along with Harrison led the fast break as though the two had played together for years. The only bright spot for the Pirates was the fine play of guard Fred Stone. The Casey, S C. native was deadly from the outside and tied Washington for scoring honors with 21 points. The game started at a slow pace with both teams relying on a controlled, easy shot, type offense. Washington was the first to break the ice when he hit a lay-up 55 seconds into the game. Stone for East Carolina came back with a lay-up to tie the score but it proved to be the last time the Pirates were in the game. With Washington, Stahl and Swanson controlling the boards and Hoffman and Harrison working the ball well and driving for the basket the Tar Babies scored 12 quick points before East Carolina hit another basket. From this point on, everyone knew DEC. 3 Dl ANNE GOOCH 9-11:30 & SCOTT MADRY READERS THEATRE JOE, BECKY & ROBERT t? jus. They were treated to quite a show with the Tar Babies lookirg like a team who had played together for years, instead of only one month. By half-time the massacre had reached 49-29 - and both teams had long abandoned for the most part their pattern-type offense. The game turned into quick pace fast-breaking fiasco with the Tar Babies proving they could run, if need be. Forward Roily Chambers, from Lenoir, N.C., came off the bench in the second half and played well. He ended the game with eight points and four rebounds. Forward Mickey Bell, from Goldsboro, N.C, also proved to be an able back-up man as he scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds. With 8:39 left in the game and the score already 81-40, Coach Bill Guthridge went completely with his bench. From that time on the first team sat and watched while everyone on the team got ample playing time. The next game for the Tar Babies will be on Dec. 9 against Duke at Carmichael. and other great cities. JV.C ivrestling meet begins in by Don Harrison Spans hYiter The 197!
