GRLENSBORO-The stage is set, and
he curtain call is but a few hours away.
Workmen here have been busy al!
eek preparing this colorful and spacious
oliseum for the state of North Carolina's
iggest sports event of the year.
The stands have been swept, the floor
ry-mopped and tons of hot dogs,
eanuts and other goodies brought in.
An eerie silence fills this basketball
alace now, however, broken only
-ccasionally by the echo of a worker's
iugh or directive.
It's sort of like the proverbial lull
efore the storm -a quiet just waiting to
e broken.
Only hours from now, that "storm"
viil erupt as it has done for the last 18
ears, complete with cheers, screams and
few scattered tears.
The storm has been labelled the
Ulantic Coast Conference Tournament,
n actuality a three-day flirtation with

It will not come as news when I say
we live in a very weight-concious society.
Many of us have fought.-.will continue
to fight the battle of the bulge. And
some of us, alas, will lose.
I have a friend whose wife is engaged
in that grim struggle. .and who is being
roundly defeated. Fortunately, my
friend doesn't seem to mind. He says,
consolingly: "Who cares if you're plump.
You're still the best wife a man ever
had." She says tearfully: "Ah, but I've
become too much of a good thing."
Which just happens to be a neat
lead-in to my text for the day. Most
assuredly, life insurance is a good thing.
Can one ever be over-insured? The
answer-you may be surprised to hear
me say -is yes.
Your premium expenditures can be
out of whack with your income. A more
common variation of this is getting too
little coverage for the money you're
shelling out. The reasons are usually
rooted in what we call hit-or-miss
buying. A policy here, a policy there...no
planning. Or very casual planning.
And yet an insurance program should
he. a precisely designed thing. An
individual thing. Your goals. Your
objectives. At Provident Mutual, we call
this Personal Planning. A very simple
name for a very important function
because it can make your dollars work a
lot harder. Let's talk about this.

nil before the
basketball madness. Unlike other storms,
though, this one shows no sign of ever
coming under control.
Born in Reynolds Coliseum in 1954,
the tournament has steadily flourished
despite the feeling just about every
member of the league has experienced at
some point -that there is something
inherently unfair about the regular season
champion having to prove itself all over
again.
A "second season" it's called by some;
"an instrument which keeps alive interest
in all seven teams," say others; and others
steadfastly contend it runs the risk of
embarrassing the conference by having a
weakling sister win the affair only to get
pounded in the Eastern Regionals.
Surprisingly, few darkhorses have won
the ACC tournament.
Over a span of 18 tournaments, only
seven teams who did not win the regular
season title won the right to go on to the
Regionals.

respectable showing during the Last part
of the season. After threatening not to
notch a single ACC win. Wake Forest
finished in sixth place instead of the
predicted seventh.
Jack McClosky's troops face Virginia
in the opening round, however, and Rich
Habbeger or not they probably won't be
around for Friday's battles.
CLEMSON-The Tigers can't match
their first round opponent's talent on the
court, but they sport far more talent in
that first seat on the bench. Tates Locke
is building a powerful coaching
reputation at Clemson while Maryland's
Lefty Driesell is getting mixed reviews at
College Park.
If the Tigers can keep lanky Dave
Angel out of foul trouble, they could will
win at least one tournament skirmish.
DUKE-Duke's miracle workers seem
to be running out of tricks.
After whipping Virginia, N.C. State
and Maryland within a span of one week,
the Blue Devils fell apart during the last
five days of the season.

To add to their wornes, Bucky Waters
does not seen to be a tcurrament coach.
During his two years at the helm, Waters
is 0-2 in ACC tourney play.
N.C. STATE-The Woifpack, with
Steve Smoral and Carl Lile helping the
backcourt, has won six of its last seven
outings. In addition, Norman Sloan
appears to be at his best in tournament
competition.
Nevertheless, State should win its
opening round game with Duke but not
much more.
VIRGINIA Bany Parkhill.
MARYLAND-The Terps have an
abundance of talent, but not experience.
The pressure of the tournament will
either cause Tom McMillen and his
cohorts to play their best or worst
basketball of the season.
Chances aren't as good as they should
be for Maryland to see a second night of
basketball this week.
NORTH CAROLINA-The Tar Heels
have a first round bye, meeting the
winner of the Duke-State game.
