"Call 800424-8880," the ad read. "It's toll free, there's no obligation, and a real live Navy recruiter will answer all your questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week." A real live Navy recruiter what more could a guy ask for? And so, secure in the arms of my 362 draft lottery number, I called them up at 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning. "Naval Recruiting Command in Washington, D.C.," tbje chipper voice answered, entirely too chipper for 4:30 in the morning. "Huh, I'm calling from North Carolina," I began to say, "And I'm just wondering " And then a funny thing happened. The voice of my real live Navy recruiter softened a little, dropping from the door-to-door salesman range down into the kindly uncle category. "Where are you from in North Carolina," he asked, "I'm from down there myself." And so he was. The only real live Navy recruiter still at work in all of these United States at 4 in the morning was nothing but an old Tarheel himself. Bill Holt, born in Johnson county, growing up in Raleigh, Creedmoor and Four Oaks, and graduating from high school in Greensboro, was pulling the late night shift on Navy telephone watch. And so, like Holt's voice, the tone of our conversation softened a little too, dropping from the serious interview range down into the country store category. "Yeah, Bill Holt's my name," he offered, "and I still got a sister over in Raleigh. "And I just finished watching one of your Carolina boys on TV." When the going gets slow in the recruiting office, he told me, watching TV is the best way to pass the time, and Don McCauley had just been charging across the Naval Recruiting Command's screen. And so it went, for 45 minutes, across the 250 miles between Chapel Hill and the Naval Yard of Washington, D.C., a friendly chat between two North Carolinians, each a little surprised to have met the other. Holt is permanently stationed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ("Lozeyanna" he calls it, just like the coffee) and has just this week been rotated to Washington for a one month special duty on the national phone line. There isn't really a lot to do late at night - "We'll get maybe 20 calls between midnight and 8:00 ajn." but when the phone line was opened about six months ago the ad writers wanted to say you could call 24 hours a day and so somebody has to stick around. During the day, though, four operators stay on duty and they all keep busy. "I walked down to the Navy recruiter the day I graduated from high school," said Hold, "me and four of my buddies. But I think I'm the only one still in. "I've been in for 1 7 years now, and I'll stay until I get tired of it. I'm single, and it's a pretty good life." Today's Navy being somewhat the swingingest branch of the service "More hair" the ad proclaims, "You can wear a beard (nicely trimmed) if you want to," it even has room for a self-avowed swinger like Holt. . "I'm really just a party man myself," he confessed, in that odd half-boast, half-apologetic tone of voice you hear from freshmen during rush. "That's the one reason I couldn't go back to living in North Carolina all the time. It's too quiet. Tm used to places like Florida and Lozeyanna, where things are still going strong at 3 in the morning. "In North Carolina, only the pop machines are still open after midnight." Talk like this from a Navy man enough to turn Admiral Dewey in his grave! But this being "The brand new Navy" (says the ad), things have changed. A sports fanatic, Holt can tell you all about last year's Peach Bowl football game, crawfishing in the Lozeyanna rivers, and chasing the women. His is not the hard-sell, he is just there to talk about whatever the caller wants. 4 If you ask about the new 3 year Navy enlistment or the delayed-reporting date, he can give you all the details. If you ask whether Navy can beat Army in this fall's football game, hell give you nothing but straight answers, ("Maybe. I hope so.") Friendly? You bet. "Go Tarheels," I said in closing. "Beat Duke," the voice came back. It's the brand new Navy, and it's toll free, 24 hours a day.
