TheDyTar HH Toronto !CampiLfl jCaleimdairl Monday. September 1 1. 1972 y "The Toronto Exchange was originally established as a social and cultural exchange for UNC and Canadian students to take part in annually, but it has turned out to be more than that for its members" said Howard Smith, a chairman of the exchange this year. - "We pick a varied cross-section of students to take part in the group. When you put 32 people together in preparation for the Canadians' visit to UNC, you are able to achieve, quite extraordinary results with an unusually common ground for understanding and friendship. Applications for the exchange can be picked up at the Student Union Information Desk today thru September 22. Interviews will be September 18-22 in the Union in a room to be announced. Those who are interested can sign up for - the interview when the application form is picked up. Applications must be returned before interviews. The Toronto Exchange began in 1958 when UNC President William Friday and the president of the University of Toronto decided to establish "a cultural exchange" between their campuses. Every year, 30 students are chosen at each school to take part in the planning and exchange visits that stretch out over a four-month period. The Canadian students visit the UNC campus for a week in November, and the UNC students return the visit to Toronto in January. ; Members of the exchange are paired together and live with their comember during the visits. Planning for the week of ; activities begins in early October after the members are chosen. . Forum host applications now offered Applications are being accepted by the Carolina Forum for those who wish to meet the fall Forum speakers Dick Gregory, Bernadette Devlin, Jack Anderson, Sen. William Proxmire, Michael Harrington and Daniel Ellsberg. Approximately 40 students will be allowed to meetreach speaker personally, 1 0 during the pre-speech dinners, and the remaining 30 during the post-speech reception. Alan Stoudemire, chairman of the Forum, said the process was begun to give each student a fair and open chance to meet the speakers. Applications are available at the Student Union information desk. Besides the normal information, the amplication reauires that the student write a brief essay concerning his interest in the speaker. We are actively seeking people of diverse interests and backgrounds.
