HILU C mmBBBHaaBBBaaBBBnUBOHOBni The fledgling Chapel Hill version of the national lettuce boycott will attempt to gain momentum today with the appearance of state AFL-CIO president Wilbur Hobby at a noon rally in The Pit. The state AFL-CIO has officially endorsed the. lettuce boycott, organized in this area by the Chapel Hill Lettuce Boycott Committee and the Young World Development (YWD) committee of the UNC YM-YWCA. Hobby will be joined in the rally by King Nyle I on piano. Nyle has plans for singing and dancing after Hobby's speech. The purpose of the boycott is to ge't area consumers to stop buying non-union iceberg lettuce, which is produced by farmers not contracted with the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee. The brand the boycotters want consumers to buy if they must buy lettuce is Aztec (brand) lettuce which is picked by United Farmworkers. Byrd's in Carrboro is the only grocery store in the immediate area to carry Aztec Eagle lettuce exclusively. Fowler's Foodstore carries a combination of both types of lettuce, while Winn Dixie, Kroger, Big Star and A&P (Eastgate and Airport Road) carry only non-union head lettuce. Interviews set for study panel Interviews to select members for a new student committee to study the student's relationship to the University will be conducted today and Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. in Suite C of the Student Union. The committee is being formed simultaneously with the University faculty-student self-study committee, which is evaluating the University for the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. Between eight and eleven students, both graduate and undergraduate, win be appointed to the committee. The committee is to be representative of the different levels of study and the different interests of the study body. The committee win study the interaction of the student with the University, both in academics and in non-academic programs such as athtetirx. Garrett's theme local involvement Flo Garrett, Democratic candidate for county commissioner, spoke in The Pit Wednesday on the importance of local government. The candidate was the first speaker in the weekly "Lunch with McGovern" rallies. Sponsored by Students for McGovern, the lunches wfll present a series of Democratic speakers each Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 until 1 :30 p.m. Garrett said if people are really concerned about clean air and water, good housing and effective welfare, they should take an interest in local government the point from which many federal programs are implemented. As a candidate for county commissioner, she feels Orange County must look ahead to the future. "We've got to plan," she said. "We don't want to create an instant slum." Specifically, she mentioned the need for water and sewer ; facilities to serve rural areas. "If the students are really as concerned about environmental problems as they seem to be, they wiU recognize the importance of local affairs." Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ochsenreiter and Michael Bruce Dunn, all of Route 1, Pittsboro, were arrested. The seizure may be the single most valuable marijuana confiscation ever made in North Carolina. Some of the marijuana was green, some in plastic bags and some in brick form. The seizure was made from a tip by Siler City police to Pittsboro police officer I.M. Frye. Frye spotted the red pickup truck on Highway 64 as it approached Pittsboro. He and officer Julian Thomas stopped the truck and took 76,351 grams of marijuana. Later in the day Pittsboro police and SBI agents arrested Ochsenreiter in a house on Pea Ridge Road and found more marijuana. Officers said a "32-gallon plastic garbage can full of marijuana was found partially buried near the house. All three were charged with felonious possession of marijuana for the purpose of resale. Bond for Dunn was set at $11,500. Ochsenreiter is held under $6,000 bond and his wife's bond was $1,000. Trial is scheduled in the November 20 term of Chatham County Superior Court. I ( W Dt.
