Nikki Giovanni
Giovanni Beaks
Nikki Giovanni differs from other
contemporary blacks becauce she believes
in "individualism at a t ie wi :i the
trend in the black comi lity is ?"'ay
from the individual and toward .he
mass."
One of the most widely publishe '
contemporary black poets of today,
Nikki pursues a personal struggle of a
black woman for "individual values in the
black community."
In her poetry and essays, Nikki writes
what she sees with a wide variety of
emotional responses, "and I take
responsibility for it," she says. "Why
should thirty million people have to have
me as a spokesman?" She writes about
her own experiences "which also happen
to be the experiences of my people. But
if I had to choose between my people's
experiences and mine, I'd choose mine
because that's what I know best."
She has written several books,
including an autobiography called
"Gemeni." She has published many
books of poetry and contributed works
to many periodicals.
A close friend tried once to explain
Nikki Giovanni in one sentence, "She has

The issues in the race are not earthshaking, but they are
important. 1 have proposed a freshman tutoring service
whereby underclassmen would stock and run a study agency.
My athletic and social programs stress involvement. Overall I
want to make the freshman presidency an active office. I am
the only candidate with a platform. I hope you will give me
the chance to put my programs and your ideas into effect.

absorbed her atmosphere she knows
her world from chief to thief." The world
to her is very real, a feeling which she
displays in many ways in her poetry.
Nikki guards her rights as an
individual, often insisting that her
experiences are "unique" to her. With her
personal experiences she explores black
history, black manhood, and black love.
She writes about central themes of today,
"in which thirty million blacks search for
self -identification and self-love. Though
the fire is just beginning to burn, the
flame is three hundred years old."
Nikki expresses the feeling that love
with a good family spirit "is what
produces healthy communities." She is
the mother of a young son. Tommy.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1943,
she graduated from Fisk University in
1967 with honors in history. She edited
the literary magazine and helped found a
campus chapter of SNCC. She did
graduate work at Columbia and the
University of Pennsylvania.

TWENTIETH,
Fresh hooters
finish unbeaten
by Elliott Warnock
Sports Writer
While the Carolina varsity soccer team
suffered through another yawn -incurring
a 6-4-1 season, the freshman
team, (consisting entirely of freshmen, a
rarity in today's ACC play) posted a
perfect 6-0 record that included two
wins over arch rival Duke University.
"Essentially, my boys never played
against any freshmen, said coach Peter
Partenheimer. "They were always playing
against someone older or younger."
Partenheimer continued "We had
Duke twice on our schedule. First, we
beat them here; then I heard they didn't
like getting defeated twice, so they would
bring down some second string varsity
players. When we played them over there
they did But that was the game when we
peaked for the season and we beat them
anyway."
The Tar Babies' wins over Duke were
both by one goal margins. Their victories
over Independence and New Hanover
High Schools were comparative larks.
When Carolina hosted Independence, the
result was a relatively easy 3-1 victory
for the frosh. The Tar Babies then rolled
over the helpless Hanover Sea Hawks,
6-1.
Partenheimer was pleased with his
personnel, feeling that most of the squad
would be able to contribute to the varsity
next year.
"Rob Hassold, who was my center half
and cocaptain, was very strong on both
offense and defense. Jeff Nelson was the
other cocaptain and was probably the
fastest man on the squad. Once he broke
past a man, no one could catch him."
One aspect of the frosh personnel that
should especially please varsity coach
Marvin Allen is the efficient goal tending.
Between goalies Todd Wells and Jim
Ellerson, the Tar Babies allowed their
opposition only three goals, including
three shutouts.
"Both goalies were of equal skill," said
Partenheimer. "Jim is a big, strong goalie
who can come out of the box to break up
a play by intimidating the other team.
Wells has excellent hands. He made a stop

"Kenyon Cook was the center fu!I He
was the leader of the defense," cont:nuf J
Partenheimer. "He has a lot of hustle and
skill. Chris Douglass was a down right
determined ball player. He was especully
skilled at sliding tackles. If he ever got
beat, he would get nght back up and go
after the man."
Forwards Nick Strange and Pete
Barton handled most of the scoring for
the frosh. Barton was the team leader
with five goals, while Strange was the
second most prolific with four. Mark
Johnson led the team in number of agists
with three.
This season's edition of the Tar Baby
soccer team was the third undefeated
frosh squad in as many years, and could
prove to be the spark that would push the
Carolina varsity into the national
playoffs.
