The Djily Tiw Heel Moixljy. January 15. 107 J Mac L4 res fmcl cks 4C Carl Neal UNC "Kverybody thought that we were too dull, so we thought we'd change that." Bill Chapman said that in jest but it was true about the 1972 football program. The past season saw a Carolina team that dominated ACC football for the second year in a row. The Tar Heel squad finished with the best record in the history of the school, 11-1. That record was the second best in the country. Southern California was the only team that had a better season (12-0) and Oklahoma was the only school to tie Carolina's efforts. commentary The only Tar Heel loss in 1972 came at the hands of Ohio State in Columbus. Woody Hayes tends to turn out real fine football teams and he didn't do too badly this year, even though Ohio State did lose two ball games. There is nothing to complain about that loss. WHAT MADE CAROLINA SUCH A GOOD team this year? A lot of things could be said about talent and the something else that makes a good team but you can't pin it down. What ever it was the Tar Heels found it. Carolina did have the talent. The offensive line was one of the best that I've ever seen. Ron Rusnak made every All-American team except one. Rusnak did not look that much better than the rest of the Carolina line. They all were tremendous, just ask the coaches in the ACC. Clemson coach Hootie Ingram was especially awed by the offensive line that blew holes in the defense all afternoon. I'm glad that a lineman from the Tar Heel squad made All-American. The line makes or breaks an offensive line. Let the record speak for itself. The line made their wide holes for a herd of great running bn s. Wc. lidn't have a Don McCauley or ten Willard, but we did have Ike Ogiesby, Sar .y Johnson, Billy Hite and Dick Oliver, bill Dooley could keep throwing fresh running backs at the defense until tn defense dropped. It took a 106-man Ohio State bench to stop that. Ogiesby had star billing at the start of the season but he was still injured from the 1971 season. When he did recover he did deserve top billing. Even after missing almost a complete season of football Oglesby's career totals make him one of the best backs ever attending UNC. BUY Sammy Johnson was responsible for some of the excitement in the 1972 season. There are quite a few quarterbacks that wish they could throw the ball as well as he did when he ran the halfback option play. Johnson proved that he could run in addition to using his arm. He moved around the backfield to be able to play more. Billy Hite was excellent. He went out there and did his job. Hite wasn't an extremely exciting runner but he did have his moments. Remember his winning touchdown with 0:58 left in the State game? Don't forget Dick Oliver. He hit the line at full speed from his fullback position and that gave him yardage almost everytime he grabbed the ball. Nick Vidnovic became . a great quarterback during the year. It could be that I just came to realize how good that he was as the year progressed. Vidnovic surprised a lot of people during the year. He could pass better than any recent Tar Heel quarterback. That passing attack gave Carolina the edge in several ball games. Of course for a quarterback to pass he needs some top receivers. Vidnovic had two in Earle Bethea and Ted Leverenz. Leverenz was the hero in the Sun Bowl, scoring 14 points. Defense decides a football game and there was some solid defense played by Dooley's "Cardiac Kids." Many people cut down the secondary before the season started and even after the first game. No negative voices' are heard about the secondary now. The line made up for any lacking in the secondary with their pass rush. Several opponents said their receivers were open but the Carolina line wouldn't give their quarterbacks time to set up to pass. This is the best compliment a defensive player can receive. ' NO SINGLE PLAYER GAVE CAROLINA the sparkle this year. The team effort and the ability to come from behind and win the close games added the glitter that attracted national attention to Tar Heel football. Dooley has improved the record and the excitement of Carolina football every year, that he has been here. He can't be asked to do it again next year because a perfect record is too much to ask of anyone. Still, a perfect record is what Dooley will work for, next year and every year. I can only wish him luck and sit back and Waiti" r-i?r ?.yr Got Some Old Texts That Ya'ld like to turn into CASH... rnAtrwm Barnes and Noble Book Stores will be buying Texts at the Student Stores Thursday Friday Saturday Monday Tuesday Hours: 9 5 daily UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA SERVING YOU THK STI DKNTS: by Tad Smith Sports Writer Carolina basketball fans this year tend to preface conversations about this year's team with "If we only still had Mac . . . " That's Bob McAdoo, who should be a senior on the Tar Heels' basketball team, but who turned professional instead. He was drafted by the Buffalo Braves of the National Basketball Association, where he is now a starting forward. Instead of being a candidate for ACC Player of the Year award, he is a prime contender for Rookie of the Year honors in the NBA. Through December, he. was only averaging 10.9 points and seven rebounds per game, but that was second among rookies, trailing only Portland's Lloyd Heal who is averaging 14.2 points' per game. - Add to that the fact that McAdoo ' played most of the first half of the season with a splint on his finger after splitting his finger in practice, before the season' opened. In the lockerroom after losing -tothe-Atlanta Hawks, in the "Magmficn Omni" (Atlanta's, new coliseum) McAdoo was mainly concerned with the brand of officiating he was up against. Hudson, at 6-6, got 6-9 ' McAdoo into foul trouble early, so Mac spent most of the game on the bench. He still managed to block four shots, two of which were charged as goal-tending ("These refs have never seen anyone who could block a shot before," he said.) But Mac was not awed by superstar Hudson, who scored 29 for the night. "If the ref doesn't let you play, it doesn't matter," he said. McAdoo said he still keeps up with Carolina basketball, as well as keeping in touch with coach Dean Smith. "They've lost one game, right?" he commented. He said that he thought Chapel Hill was okay. Asked about the bonus he supposedly will receive upon graduation from a college, he refused to name the amount, but said he planned to "go back to Carolina to summer schools until I earn my degree." Bob McAdoo is now a professional basketball player. He is preoccupied with the happening around the NBA courtside, and after a loss he does not like to talk. When pressed, he admits that he feels the Carolina team this year, had he stayed, would "go all the way." behind by only .6. UNC's side horse team picked up a few points as Joe Burt placed second and Ben Edkins placed third with a 6.53. After the side-horse event Carolina held a slim .8 lead. . The next event, still rings', is where Slippery Rocks picked up a strong four-point lead. Ron Peers, high man for the Heels in this event, placed third with a score of 8.13. Slippery Rock took first and third in the long horse event. Carolina's Jimeson placed second with a score of 8.8. Coach Fred . Sanders was pleased with the performance of the promising freshman. "These are the kinds of scores we've been expecting out of Jeff," said Sanders. Jimeson placed fourth in the all-around scoring with a 35.22. Bobby Semes, scoring a 7.5, captured third place on the "p-bars" for Carolina. The high bar event was a disaster for the Tar Heels. Slippery Rock swept the event, winning first, second and third. UNC's highest score on the "pipe" was a 6.2 by Semes which was only good enough for a fourth. Overall, Sanders was pleased with his team's effort on all but the high bar and still rings events. "We're going to work high bar and rings every day this week," Sanders said. The team is preparing for a meet with Michigan, former NCAA champions and Sanders' alma mater. The Michigan meet will begin at 8 p.m. on January 20 after the Duke basketball game in Carmichael Auditorium. Approaching the mid-point of the season, however, the Braves were only 11-27, almost 20 games behind division-leading Boston. "You just keep playing like this," coach Jack Ramsay said after the loss to the Hawks, "and you'll start winning." McAdoo, for one, apparently will not settle for playing the same. In the first game of the new year, against hapless Philadelphia (which is streaking towards a new record for losses in the league) Mac led the Braves to a 114-110 victory with a career-high 30 points, and a giant step towards rookie-of-the-year honors. McAdoo was a stellar forward-center for the Tar Heels last season. A transfer from Vincinnes Jr. College in Indiana, Mac won the ACC tournament MVP award and was an all-ACC performer.
