THe 0lvTarHw Carolina downs Clemson, Tech Tigers leave North-South early 0- 3 X McKvlay. Fetyruary 12. 1973 Mi 1 A by Winston Cavin Sports Editor CH ARLOTTE Tates Locke just couldn't wait. Locke, the fiery Clemson coach, was so anxious to get his team out of the North-South Doubleheader that he paraded his boys off the Charlotte Coliseum floor before the Clemson-Carolina game was even over. Locke was less than pleased with the officiating in both nights of the doubleheader, as his Tigers lost to N.C. State, 68-61, and to the Tar Heels, 84-69. It was Clemson's last appearance in the two-day annual affair as the Tigers are pulling out. Evidently, they don't like the idea of facing State and UNC back-to-back. Furman will take Clemson's place in next year's doubleheader. Locke's surprise move provided the most exciting moments of the dull cage matchups. The game was called after Clemson's departure and the final score stood. For the Tar Heels, it was an interesting weekend all around, as they rebounded from last week's loss to Slate with two big victories. Carolina defeated weak Georgia Tech, 107-72, Friday night. The double wins brought UNC's overall record to 18-4, 5-3 in the ACC. The doubleheader opened with the Tech-Carolina slaughter, but in the first half Carolina looked terrible. The Tar Heels suffered probably their worst half of the season against the hapless Yellow Jackets, shooting only 39 per cent in the first 20 minutes. Still, they led, 43-36, at the break. Carolina outscored the Jackets 18-2 in the opening minutes of the second half to get the rout rolling. The lead continued to mount until, with over eight minutes left. Tar Heel coach Dean Smith called off the dogs. The Tech mismatch was only a warmup for the Clemson game, which gave the Heels a chance to take second place in the ACC standings. The first half saw Carolina roar to a commanding 22-8 lead, and from there it was all over. Darrell Elston hit 1 1 of his career-high 1 7 points in the first half as UNC led, 44-29. The second half was only a matter of finishing the game, as Smith again substituted freely until Locke and his men ended it at 84-69. Smith was pleased with the wins. "We were very aggressive, he said. "Our defense was very good. We had good shot selections, and it was the seventh straight zone we've attacked real well. Carolina is in second place. Team ACC Overall Reggie McAfee established himself firmly among the nation's best distance runners Saturday in Houston, running the second best mile of the year in the country. The North Carolina track star set a school and personal record time of 4:00.4. Unfortunately for McAfee, Dave Wootle ran the best mile of the year in the same race, finishing a tenth of a second ahead of McAfee at 4:00.3. In the 880, Carolina stars Lennox "the Black Flash" Stewart notched a 1:52.1 time, good enough for third, while Tony Waldrop hit the same time and finished fifth. One tenth of a second ahead of Waldrop, at 1:52.0, Ken Swinson took the win. In the Mason Dixon games in Louisville, Kentucky, Carolina broad jumper Hubert West leaped twenty-four feet, two and three quarter inches to place fourth. The dual meet with Duke was cancelled due to the weather. W-L W-L N.C. SWEEPING INTO CHAPEL HILL like an Arctic cold wave, the Maryland Terrapins devastated the North Carolina wrestling team, 49-0, Friday night before a sparse crowd in Carmichael Auditorium. It was the 23rd straight time that the Terps have beaten Carolina and the eighth shutout since 1952. Carolina now has only two wins against seven losses this year. THE NORTH CAROLINA FENCING team completely dominated the Tigers of Clemson University as they defeated their South Carolinian hosts 22-5. In a preliminary meet, the Tar Heel fencers and coaches beat the South Carolina AFLA26-1. The Tar Heel sabremen shut-out the Tigers 9-0, but Clemson managed to win four bouts in the epee competition. In the foils the Tax Heels won eight of nine bouts.
