It mmm iiin m Thursday. February 15. 1973 Th OMv Tr H-J ACC stats: UNC leads shootin by Winston Cavin Sports Editor North Carolina continues to field the best shooting team in the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to statistics released Wednesday by the ACC Service Bureau. The Tar Heels, who have led the nation in field-goal accuracy in recent weeks, are shooting 54.3 per cent from the floor to lead the conference. In other ACC statistics, Carolina ranks third in scoring offense, scoring defense, rebounding and average scoring margin, and seventh in free throw percentage. The l'.ir Heels are running up an average of 87.5 points per game, behind Winston Cavin Cavaliers stink Duke's stunning 90-66 win over Virginia the other night leaves a couple of questions unanswered. Is Duke really that good? Is Virginia that bad? Or was it just Cameron Indoor Stadium? Certainly, no one could have foreseen the margin of the Blue Devils' victory, even though everyone knows they are tough at home. Virginia waltzed in with a 10-6 record, including a six-point win over Carolina in Carmichael. Duke was a mediocre 10-9. But Duke broke open a close game Tar Heel beaten by Just to put it in writing, the North Carolina wrestling team dropped another meet; this time against William and Mary. The Tar Heels traveled to meet the Indians on their home ground and lost 35-6, Wednesday night. "It was the first time in some weeks that we let another team dictate the style and tempo," said head coach Sam Barnes. "They controlled the meet, while we wrestled well but not intelligently. They would run to the edge of the mat then wrestle like hell, so we couldn't get any takedowns." Sophomores Bob Brinton and Charles Moose won decisions in the 134 and 142 pound weight classes respectively for the Tar Heels. Barnes had dropped Moose to 142 from his original 150 class, while I Featuring I the Tar 1 Heal Room CHOICE OF 3 MEATS (EXCEPT HAM) CHOICE OF ALL VEGETABLES ON THE LINE THURSDAY IS HAM DAY ALL YOU CAN EAT $2.00 CHOICE OF ALL VEGETABLES ON THE LINE EASTGATE SHOPPING CENTER CLOSED MONDAYS Crossword Puzzle ACROSS Everybody's uncle Talked Knock Man's name Irritated New Zealand parrot Girl's name Unit of Portuguese currency Everyone Dance Step Danish land division Call on Conjunction Street urchins Competitor Negative prefix Disperse Preposition Go in Former Russian rulers Likely It is (contr.) Virginia sets the pace in scoring defense, allowing only 70.0 points per opponent. Clemson surrenders 71.8 and UNC is third with 72.2. In average scoring margin, the Tar Heels remain third behind State and Maryland. State averages 22.6 points more than its foes, Maryland 1 7.0 and Carolina 15.3. Carolina has the best average scoring margin for ACC games 1 0.2 points per game. In rebounding, Carolina again trails Maryland and State. The tall Terps are grabbing 48.2 rebounds per game while State gets 46.7 per outing. Carolina's rebounding figure is 44.5. Carolina's worst statistical category is again free throw percentage. The Tar early in the second half, and from there Virginia deteriorated so badly that Wahoo coach Bill Gibson was reduced to holding the ball near the end just to get it over with. As they did at Maryland a month ago, the Cavaliers looked worse than anyone could imagine. They stunk up Cole Field House en route to a 93-74 rout at the hands of the Terps.with Barry Parkhill scoring two points and fouling out with 15 minutes left. Evidently, their performance in Durham was just as bad, matmen Indians moving Marcus Williams to 150 and Bob Barrett to 158. Barrett, Dennis Ryan, William Huffstetler, and Sam Evans lost by decision. Heavyweight Joel Wright, who was just returning to action after an illness, and Williams were pinned by their opponents. This Saturday night at 7:00 the Tar Heels host the Virginia Cavaliers for Carolina's last home meet of the regular season. With only eight days remaining until the conference tournament in Durham, Barnes sees the match with Virginia as crucial. i The Cavaliers managed to slip past Carolina 14-26 last year, but hopefully with the return of Lindsey Wrenn, Ron Secrest and Gary Wheeler, the Tar Heels might be able to narrow the gap. Duke, as usual, leads the ACC. with 79.2. followed by State, Clemson, Virginia, Wake Forest, Mary land and Carolina. In individual 'statistics. State's sensational David Thompson continues to lead the conference in scoring. Thompson is hitting 26.1 points per game, including 88 in three games last week. He was named ACC player of the week for his efforts. Behind Thompson are Tony Byers of Wake Forest (22.8), Tom McMillen of Maryland (22.3), Chris Redding of Duke (18.8), Tommy Burleson of State (18.0), .Dnke maybe even worse. While the Cavaliers were putting on their display of ineptitude Tuesday night (Parkhill fouled out again), the Devils were burning. Gary Melchionni set a new Cameron Indoor Stadium record with an amazing 12 assists as the Dukes enjoyed a fine shooting night (54.5 per cent). The Devils also played some fine defense, something a lot of college teams try in vain to do. They held UVa's scoring punch to zilch for much of the night. Parkhill, Wally Walker and Jim Hobgood went nine-for-29 together from the floor. Walker had led the conference in field-goal percentage through last week's games. He hit 1 2 of 13 when Virginia whacked Carolina earlier this season. The win scored another victory for the gym, well known as a snake pit in the ACC. Duke has posted a 108-15 record there over the last 1 1 seasons and the best may be yet to come for coach Bucky Waters' boys. They still have visits from State and UNC scheduled for this season. au EMU IS PTEPS mm mm V "ONCAMPVS" "ON CAMPUS" Y c n n 0) 5 If DRY GLEANING SPECIAL lift DAY Wednesday) La r n yyy Your Prestige Cleaners 302 E. He's shooting 63.8 per cent, pushing McMillen out of first place. Jones is third at 59.2 per cent. Karl is ninth (52.5) and Stahl ranks 1 2th (47.3 per cent). Clemson's Buddy Martin still leads the league in free throw percentage, shooting 88.7 per cent from the line. Behind the amazing Martin is Duke's Gary Melchionni, who hits 86.3. Carolina's Stahl ranks fifth at 82.8, Karl is 12th at 72.5 and Jones is 1 5th at 62.4. The last major category is rebounding, where Maryland's towering Len Elmore is the leader with 11.7 rebounds per game. Burleson grabs 10.6 per game to rank second, but Jones is close behind him at 10.5 per game. The only other Tar Heel ranking in rebounding is Stahl with six. He is 15th. With only a few weeks left in the season, the leaders have emerged. Thompson appears destined to win the ACC scoring race, while Martin should stay on top in free throw accuracy. Elmore and Walker have good chances to win their respective championships. Gymnasts go to Ga. The North Carolina gymnastics team, led by all around performer Bobby Semes, headed south yesterday, making its first stop in Charleston, South Carolina, to meet the Bulldogs of the Citadel. Tonight the Tar Heels take on the varsity of Georgia Southern College at 8:00 p.m. Carolina, whose record now consists of four wins and only one defeat, are heavy favorites in the meet. The Tar Heels' only loss so far this season has been at the hands of Michigan. Carolina has never lost to a southern team.
