Curtis
by Joe Patton
Assistant Feature Editor
Curtis Mayfield entertains at 8 p.m.
Sunday, March 4 in Carmichael
Auditorium. Tickets at $4 go on sale
today at the Carolina Union Information
Desk.
Long an established performer on the
contemporary music scene, Curtis
Mayfield's dynamic score for the hit film
"Superfly" has confirmed the
entertainer's presence in the Seventies.
Mayfield's solo singing career began in
earnest in the Chicago of the late Fifties.
He and friend Jerry Butler then joined
Samuel Gooden and Fred Cash. They
called themselves the Impressions.
After the wide success of "For Your
Precious Love," Butler left to pursue a
solo career and Curtis Mayfield blew out
of the Windy City as lead singer of the
Impressions. "People Get Ready,"
"Gypsy Woman," and "We're a Winner"
were important lyrical and musical links
among the group's chain of hits that
remain an integral part of the Sixties
music scene.
'Images'
The Carolina Union Gallery
Committee and the General Alumni
Association are now accepting entries for
"Images," the University's annual
amateur photography contest.
Alumni Review Editor Roland Giduz
says, "Our interest in sponsorship is to

for our files and for publication in the
'University Report' and 'Alumni
Review.' "
"Everyone on campus seems to have a
camera in his hand," says Rusty Taylor,
Gallery Committee Chairman. "We want
to see the finished products."
Nearly $200 in award money will be
.offered. The Alumni Association will
select from winning photographs for
publication in the 'Alumni Review.'
Students, faculty . and staff on the
Chapel Hill campus are eligible to enter
photographs. AH entries must be
submitted at the North Gallery of the
Carolina Union by Wednesday, March 7.

The members of Les Ballets Africains
are carefully chosen from the 96 regional
dance groups of the Republic of Guinea.
Their performances synthesize abandon
and elegance to expose the legend, the
history and the pageantry of Africa.
Clive Barnes of the New York "Times"
calls Les Ballets Africains "the most
distinguished and sophisticated of all
African dance companies. A stylish and
tremendously exciting show."
Leo Kottke
Leo Kottke sings at 10 p.m.
Wednesday in Memorial Hall. Tickets at
$1.50 are now on sale at the Carolina
Union Information Desk.
Kottke, a virtuoso guitarist, is equally
adept at flat-picking, finger-picking and
bottlenecking. He also sings songs about
love, good and bad, funny and sad. His
"Lullaby" laments the demise of a Lady
Margaret and "Standing in My Shoes" is a
policy statement to his ex-lover.
Milan Orchestra
The Angelicum Orchestra of Milan will
appear at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Hall
under the auspices of the Chapel Hill
Concert Series. Tickets are $ 1 and may be
