But to Dean Smith's North Carolina Tar Heels, Saturday's contest with Florida State was as significant as any regular-season game could be. The Tar Heels were going all out to avenge last year's 79-75 upset loss to the Seminoles in the NCAA semifinals. They did just that in handing Hugh Durham's charges a stinging 91-79 defeat in Madison Square Garden. Playing before a sparse crowd of 6,347 fans, many of whom came up from North Carolina, Smith's men outrebounded the taller Florid ians and led most of the way before canning the victory. Florida State outshot Carolina, 59.6 West makes nationals Track by Toby Harrell Sports Writer Carolina closed out its regular indoor track season Saturday by. overwhelming Clemson University in a non-scoring dual meet in the frigid Tin Can. The Tar Heels took nine of thirteen firsts, with co-captain Hubert West winning both the broad jump and the 60-yard dash. West jumped 24 feet, TA inches for first in the event, but more importantly, the jump qualified him for the national finals in Detroit next month. Still feeling his oats after the jump, West trotted to Carolina leading to the ACC tournament that starts Friday in Durham. The Heels made 19 of 20 from the line, considerably better than their 68 per cent average. The Seminoles did get more assists than Carolina, something few teams are able to do. They got 23 assists to UNC's 18. UNC had 19 turnovers to FSU's 21. and Carolina outrebounded Florida State, 34-23. Smith lauded the play of his big men, who did an amazing job on the boards. "Florida State is a physical team," Smith said. "Bobby Jones, Ed Stahl and Mitch Kupchak did outstanding jobs on the boards. "Our defense was sporadic at times, but give Florida State credit for that." team impressive the other side of the track and won the 60 with a time of 6.6, barely edging out fellow co-captain Hank Snowden, who in turn, finished second in the-broad jump. I said there was no way this team could be as good as last year's second-ranked team," he said. "I never compare teams, but I'm pleasantly surprised." It is the sixth season out of seven that Carolina has won , 20 games or more. The game gave freshman Mitch Kupchak a chance to perform before his family and his high school buddies from Brentwood, where he was a terror last year. Kupchak hit three of five from the field and had five rebounds. The Tar Heels jumped to an early 7-2 lead after two and a half minutes, but the Seminoles came back to take a 16-13 lead with 12:55 left in the first half. The Floridians started hitting some outlandish shots and it looked like trouble. with a throw of 39 feet, lOVz inches. Chuck Ball seems to be getting back into form in the high jump and won the event by clearing 6 feet, 8 inches. David Hawkins was third for the Heels with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. The Tar Heels also took second and third in the triple jump with Darryl Kelly going 46 feet, 1 1 inches and Fred Woltz hop, skip and jumping 43 feet, 3Vi inches. Although no spectacular times or distances were recorded at this meet, the 'Tar Heels seem to be in good shape, except for a few colds. If the team can remain healthy, it's possible they could give perennial champs Maryland a run for their money in the conference championships next weekend at College Park. Maryland is the ACC's perennial champion in indoor as well as outdoor track. The Tar Heels can enhance Carolina's Carmichael Cup chances with an ACC title. The Tar Heels rolled to a 42-3S advantage at the half. The Seminoles saw their chances wane when seven-foot center Lawrence McCray picked up his fourth foul w ith 15 minutes to go. Flashy guard Otto Petty, the 5-7 speedster who devoured Carolina last season, picked up number four nine minutes later and Florida State was dead. The foul-pbgued Seminoles did put on one brief rally. Reggie Royals drove the lane to cut UNC's lead to 60-55 with 12:28 left in the game, and Petty s outside shot made it 64-59 with 10 minutes left. It was the closest FSU came, however, as Carolina soon burst out into a 74-63 lead. Smith sent his men into the four corners with a 74-64 lead and four minutes left and it was all over. Royals and Otis Cole each bombed in 29 points for FSU. Royals was the leading rebounder for State with eight. Petty had a blazing nine assists before fouling out. For Carolina, Stahl pumped in 26 points, while Karl had 25. Jones led in rebounds with 1 1 and Darrell Elston dealt out six assists. After the game, the Seminole coach said Carolina's zone defense in the second half hurt his team's inside game, where they massacred Carolina last year. Durham would not allow anyone to talk to his players. "They're in pretty bad spirits right now," he said.
