Friday, March 2. 1973 ACC championship meet The Daily Tar Heel TJ Pi .Fencers jonit for tittle by Elliott Warnock Sports Writer Today is the day for all good fencers to set sail for the south to Clemson and the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament to be held tonight and Saturday. All ACC schools will be participating in the third annual competition, except Wake Forest. North Carolina, the winner of the first two tournaments, is favored to make it three in a row despite anticipated strong challenges from Duke and N.C. State. Finishing the regular season with a record of 1 1 wins and two losses, the Tar Heels entered post-season competition last weekend by sweeping the North Carolina AFLA state tournament in Raleigh. Walter -Triplette, Bill Shipman, and Bob Peterson won places in epee, while Jim Krause took the top spot in foil and Steve Piantadosi was the number one finisher in sabre. "It's going to be extremely close this year," says Miller, "but Pm not any less confident than I have been during the past two seasons. I "am definitely pleased with last weekend's performance." Carolina will send three fencers plus one alternate for each of the three divisions, as will every team entering the two day round-robin competition. Dave Lynn, Shipman and Peterson will be the starters for Carolina in the epee, with Kevin Gallagher as the alternate. In foils, Krau Travis Hanes, and Jim M ulj U uu Cj J Scolt will make the trip to the Tiger's Den, while Charlie Brown will be the fourth man. Piantadosi, the team captain will lead the sabre division along with Rob Rivers, and John Thacker. The alternate is Thurbert Baker. Lynn, Krause and Piantadosi are all favored to win their individual division championships. Lynn's top competitor in epee will be teammate Shipman. Dick Whitehead of State will also be in the running for the gold as is Ed Pettis of Duke. Tom Clark, also of Duke should be Piantadosi's major concern in the sabre. He defeated Piantadosi in regular season play but lost to him in a post-season clash. Dave Sinodis of State is considered the other strong contender for the gold medal. In the foils competition, Duke's Carl Meyer will be the object of most of Krause's attention in the tournament. Miller feels that his team's top physical condition will also be an important part of the squad's effort for the championship. The team has been holding an extra practice in the mornings recently. J Carolina's wincing George Karl tries to get control of the ball and follow Bobby jones' pick for two points. The Tar Heels dropped this one to State, but. they'll have another chance when they visit Duke. (Staff photo by George Brown) UNC gridders ready for Blue CSS Wh by Winston Cavin Sports Editor Spring football practice at Carolina will wind up Saturday when the Tar Heels stage the annual Blue-White intrasquad game in Kenan Stadium. : The Tar Heels have been holding off-season drills since early in February. Now, most of the hitting and running is over. : The game will get under way at the usual time of 11 a.m: So as not to conflict with the Carolina-Duke basketball game set to begin in Durham at 1 :30. Coaching staffs have been selected for the game. Coach Bill Dooley announced Thursday that there will be no head coaches for the game. Dooley and his chief assistant, Bobby Collihgs, will watch the game from the press box. . One squad will be coached by Jim Carmody, Vito Ragazzo, Pat Watson and Al Groh while the other team will be coached by Vic Spooner, Billy Hickman, Charlie Carr and Sandy Kenney. Dooley said rosters for the game will be released today. He indicated that every, effort will be. made to divide the squad equally to insure a close and exciting game. Carolina students can get in with their JD's and athletic passes. . Spring practice provides an opportunity to get a preview of next fall's football team. The coaches use the 20-day workout to screen prospects and make plans for the fall. The DTH interviewed Dooley this week to talk about next . season's outlook. The offense was examined in Thursday's paper. Today we look at the defense. The Tar Heel defense lost five ALL-ACC performers from ' 1972's 11-1 Sun Bowl championship team. Carolina lost seven players who started on defense at one time or another. Ends Bill Chapman and Gene Brown, tackles Eric Hyman and Robbi VandenBroek, linebackers Mike Mansfield and defensive backs j Lou Angelo and Gred Ward have all departed. Brown, Hyman, Mansfield, Angelo and Jimmy DeRatt made All-ACC, and only DeRatt returns. It goes without saying that Dooley and his staff has a big job to do if Carolina is to keep its national football standing . alive. Much work needs to be done at end, where Brown and Chapman tore up opponents last year. Now, it looks like the. ; best bets at the position could be junior Ted Elkins and junior f; John Tessar. Both were reserves last -year. Others who look good include, Tim Bialy ancLTen;y Be'aJtx off Jast year's juojQ.fJ varsity. All have performed well in spring training. : .---.-....-. :::::::::::::: 'A -ft Would you tell me. please,, ivAicA, ua-u j ougftc to ao from, Aere?9 "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," Said the Cat. u9 dont nvucA, care wAere, 19 SaccL &ce "Then it doesn't much matt er which way you 50, said the Cat. GUIDANCE & TESTING CENTER NASH HALL f II I HP" At the defensive tackle positions, Carolina enjoyed great success in '72, but the likes of Hyman and VandenBroek are gone. Their backups, Ronnie Robinson and Peter Talty have both had good springs, says Dooley, and both should start next year. "But we've got to find new backups," Dooley notes. "We were real strong there last year, and now we've got a depth problem there." ' Other tackle candidates who have done well are Steve Baker and Duke Thompson off the junior varsity team, along with reshirt Scott Reynolds. If they come through, Carolina should be all right. "Linebacker-wise, we're looking," Dooley says. A lot of people are in the running for linebacking jobs. UNC goes with four linebackers, so that many more people have a chance. : At inside linebacker, Carolina must replace Mansfield. Terry Taylor returns. "He's been a real bright spot," Dooley says of Taylor. Steve Early, who was hurt in mid:season, is another prospect, but he has not worked in spring drills due to his injury. "If he comes back," Dooley says, "we'll be all right there." ; Junior Tommy Jones and reshirt David Kuratnick figure in 2 Jhe linebacker picture.' Others who have looked good at one r time or another include soph Barry Jarvisv who was a stud on the JV team. He has missed spring work .with a broken foot bone. :ti ,n Gary Cowan, a good one who was hurt near the end of the season, has been moved to ;nside linebacker. He split time at outside linebacker last year. He is still hWrt Outside linebackers are in abundance this spring. All-ACC DeRatt returns to nail down one starting spot. He is a junior, as is Tom Embrey, who also looked good last fall. Cowan and Mark DiCarlo split time there last seasbn, but DiCarlo has missed spring practice with an injury.JcTtlover from last fall. All four should be tops at outside linebacker. : The defensive backfield poses big problems. Only one starter-senior Phil Lamm-is back. Leading candidates for the other two spots are senior Earl CheSion, junior Kip Arnall (who has a broken nose), soph Rick Kelly and others off the freshman team. ; All things considered, the Tar Heel defense should be effective enough next fall, but the new men will have to develop quickly if Carolina is to survive tough early-season tests with national powers Missouri and N.C. State. : There is one more thing kicking specialists. Last fall's placek(cker,,; Ellis Alexander, and the chief punter, Daje "L'ydecker,-both return.'"
