by Winston Cavin
Sports Editor
For those who expect Carolina to
romp over Duke Saturday afternoon,
either you don't know your history or
you're a blind optimist. It's not going to
be easy. ,
The Carolina Tar Heels, trying to
recover from a hair-raising loss to State
Tuesday night, will try to get back in the
win column against Duke in Durham
Saturday afternoon
Game time is set for 1 :30 p.m. and the
contest will be regionally televised. Junior
varsity teams of the two schools will meet
tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 8
p.m.
Five times since 1967, Carolina teams
have taken that dangerous 1 2-mile trek to

With only one weekend left in the
regular season, the final ACC basketball
standings are still a mist. This weekend's
contests will determine the standings and
the pairings for the upcoming conference
tournament.
After Wake Forest upset Maryland
Wednesday night, ,the; picture is even
more confusing. This weekend's decisive
games find Carolina visiting Duke,
Maryland going to Virginia, and Wake
Forest playing at N.C. State.
State has locked up the regular-season
title with its 11-0 record. Carolina is still
second with a 7-4 mark, while Maryland
is third at 6-5. Virginia and Duke are tied
at 4-7. Clemson is ; 4-8 (their regular
season is over) and. Wake Forest is last
with a 3-8 mark.
The ACC tournament will begin next
Thursday in Greensboro.

Cameron Indoor Stadium, only to come
away with a loss. Not since January,
1967, has UNC beaten Duke in the
tobacco city.
Of course, the home court advantage
means a lot in the ACC. But Duke may be
one of the deadliest places of all. Over the
past 11 seasons, Duke teams have
compiled a 1 09-1 6 record in Durham.
No matter what happened all those
other times, Carolina will definitely have
a good chance of beating Duke. The Heels
have already done that twice this
season -by 91-86 in the Big Four
tournament and by 81-71 in Chapel Hill.
Tar Heels coach Dean Smith is not
looking forward to visiting the Pit. "It's
very difficult to beat any good team three
times in one season," he says of the
Devils. "But of course it can be done.

The Tar Heels will carry a 21-6 overall
record into the game, 7-4 in conference
play. Duke is 12-12 and 4-7. It will be the
last regular-season game of the year, and
Duke faces the possibility of having its
first losing season since 1939.
Smith expresses confidence that the
Heels will bounce back from their
disappointing loss' to the Wolfpack. But
he warns that Duke has the potential to
be an ACC championship team. Duke's
greatest win so far has been over
Maryland in Durham.
Blue Devils to watch will be guard
Gary Melchionni and forward Chris
Redding. Melchionni is the team's best
ballhandler and Redding does most of the
work under the boards. Redding is also
snow reduced to a heavy slush.

to Duke
Duke's leading scorer (19 points).
Other Blue Devil principals include
guard Kevin Billerman and frontcourt
men Alan Shaw and Bob Fleischer. Shaw,
a senior, has had a poor final season,
while sophomores Billerman and
Fleischer are pleasant surprises for
Waters.
Duke subs who could play key roles
include 6-9 freshman Willie Hodge, one of
the nation's hottest recruits last year, 6-4
soph Pete Kramer, who plays forward,
and 6-4 Dave O'Connell, another hot
freshman. O'Connell is a guard.
Carolina will go into the contest with a
solid starting five. Guards George Karl
and Darrell Elston, forwards Bobby Jones
and Donn Johnston and center Ed Stahl
will start. If they get into foul trouble
(something that always happens in
Durham), look for John O'Donnell and
Mitch Kupchak in the frontcourt and
Brad Hoffman and Ray Hite in the
backcourt.
The Blue Devils have had their ups and
downs this year. There have been nights
when they approached their potential,
but on other occasions, they have been as
inept as any college team could be.
But no matter how bad they have
looked in the past, Duke will be a
different team Saturday. With 8,800
hooting Durham fans egging them on,
Waters' men will give Carolina all it
wants
