When defending Atlantic Coast
Conference champion North Carolina
began its season this year, one position
Coach Bill Dooley wasn't overly worried
about was quarterback.
First there was veteran Nick Vidnovic.
And as a back up there was Chris Kupec. But
then came Maryland and Vidnovic was
sidelined with a shoulder injury. And then
came Missouri and Kupec suffered a broken
collarbone.
That might seem likely to leave Dooley
sinking into melancholy with Vidnovic still
an indefinite player and with arch-rival
North Carolina State, win-hungry after two
straight losses to non-conference foes,
waiting in Raleigh for the Tar Heels
Saturday. But not so. With sophomore Billy
Paschall around, it turns out that Dooley
may have more depth at quarterback than
even he had thought.
Paschall, despite a couple of costly
fumbles in the Tar Heels 27-14 loss to
Missouri, connected on nine of 15 passes for
1 15 yards and ran for 68 yards while filling in
for Kupec.

"For a third string quarterback to come
off the bench and give us that type leadership
is remarkable,"' Dooley said, "lie showed me
a lot out there."
Dooley said he was proud of the way his
squad was playing and that I feel we can be
a good football team if we can just execute
better."
While Dooley could see some good in the
loss to Missouri, State Coach Lou H oltz was
much less optomistic about the Wolf pack's
31-21 loss to Georgia.
"We just played dumb, stupid football,"
he said. "It was the worst we've played in a
while. And that's not the players' fault, it's
the coaches."
State (2-2. 1-0), could go ahead of
Maryland (2-1, 1-0) in the ACC
championship race with a win Saturday. A
.victory by Carolina (1-2, 0-1) would put
Maryland in the lead. The Tar Heels last year
won the game 34-33.
In the only conference game last weekend.
Virginia suprised Duke 7-3, cuasing Cavalier
coach Don Lawrence to proclaim that
Virginia (2-2, 1-0) has begun a new trend.
In other games of the past weekend. Wake .
Forest (1-2, 0-0) was demolished 41-0 by
Southern Conference power Richmond;
Maryland sept past hapless Villanova 31-3;
and scrappy Clemson was finally beaten by
Georgia Tech 29-21.

Last week against the N.C. State Wolflcts
the Tar Babies started jumping up and down
excitedly at the beginning of the fourth
quarter. The reason they were acting in this
atypical manner is that they knew they were
going to win. Enthusiasm breeds confidence.
Against the Wolflets, the Tar Babies were
at their big-play best, as they intercepted
three passes, recovered three fumbles and
stopped State twice inside the Carolina 20.
It was a perfect example of Carolina's
defensive philosophy bend but don't
break. The Tar Babies w ere w illing to give up
a little yardage at a time to State's veer
offense but not a lot of yardage at once.
The offense didn't waste these
opportunities as two turnovers led directly to
touchdowns.
Today the Tar Babies face another veer
attack in Richmond. Their offense is not as
potent as the Wolflets but the task will be
made more difficult by a rash of injuries to
Carolina's offensive squad.
Richmond on the other hand, has most of
its key players healthy. Their quarterback
Larry Shaw, brother of N.C. State QB Bruce
Shaw and Sophomore Bruce Wilkerson, the
third quarterback on the varsity, are both
available.
