The Union Board of Directors voted

statement, the latest vote finalized a decision
made in the spring of 1972 when the Board

The fee was inadequate to finance both the

You don't have to have a positive pregnancy test to get an
abortion in Chapel Hill now.
If you think you're pregnant but don't know for sure, you
may qualify for a menstrual extraction, an abortion
procedure now be;ng performed at N.C. Memorial Hospital
.at a relatively low cost.
A simplified version of the D and C or vacuum aspiration
method, menstrual extraction cannot be performed after
seven weeks (49 days from the first day of the last menstrual
period).
A pregnancy test is not valid until six weeks from the first
day of the last period, and since menstrual extraction cannot
be done after 5 weeks, you may have to make an
appointment before knowing you're pregnant.
"It's a gamble, Sharon Meginnis, Student Health Service
counselor, said. "You have to decide whether it's worth it.
A menstrual extraction costs $75 as compared to a D and
C, which ranges from $125-425.
Monday is the only day on which menstrual extractions
are performed and a limited number are scheduled.
Therefore, you might have to make a projection,
Meginnis said, as to whether you can schedule an

leaks concerning charges that the vice

Agnew, w hile not referring to Petersen by

Saturday in condemning "malicious and
outrageous" news leaks.
Petersen had been quoted previosly by
CBS as saying, "We've got the evidence.
We've got it cold."

were becoming increasingly expensive to
maintain.
The statement says that the three dollar
programming fee received from each
undergraduate has remained unchanged
since 1954; thus, in order to prevent a raise in
fees, the Board voted to request the
administration to take over the costs of the
locator service.
Originally, the Board intended to halt the
service after the second summer session of
1972, but because of high level changes in the
administration, the action was postponed.
In April of 1973, the Board of Directors
again voted to end the locator service. The
effective date was to be Sept. 30. Although
the administration had been requested to
provide funds, the money was never
available.
The Sept. 28 vote modified the earlier
decision by changing the cut-off date to Oct.
15. According to the statement, this was
done to give the administration and the
telephone company time to plan and to give
students a chance to compile their personal
directories.

In conversations this morning, the
attorney general assured the White House
that Petersen was not the source of the story
reported on CBS," Warren said.
Warren also was asked about an article in
Newsweek magazine saying J. Fred
Buzhardt, White House counsel, tried to get
Agnew to resign in exchange for being
allowed to plead guilty to a minor charge.
Warren acknowledged that Buzhardt played
a "go-between" role in negotations between
Agnew's lawyers and Justice Department
attorneys concerning the allegations against
the vice president.
But Warren declined to confirm or deny
the Newsweek report that Buzhardt
suggested that Agnew resign.
Richardson said Sept. 25 that negotiations
had taken place between Agnew's lawyers
and himself but they were not fruitful and he
decided to let evidence go before a federal
grand jury in Baltimore.
Warren said Nixon's lawyers were not
"dictating any substantive action in the
proceedings."
Greek military cabinet
United Press International
ATHENS President George
Papadopoulos Monday announced the
resignation of his military cabinet and the
appointment of the first civilian prime
minister to head Greece's post-republican
government.
Papadopoulos named historian-politician
Spyros Markezinis as prime minister of the
appointment on a Monday that will not exceed the seven
week limit.
Menstrual extraction is limited to very early pregnancies
and pregnancy possibilities because it is performed with a
very small vacuum aspirator that does not require prior
dilation of the cervix.
Performed at the OB-GYN clinic on an outpatient basis,
menstrual extraction does not require a pregnancy test nor a
psychiatric consultation.
Meginnis suggested that counseling may be helpful,
however.
"I don't know any person who can't benefit from talking to
someone in detail about this decision, she said.
Meginnis said she is available through the Student Health
Service to answer any questions concerning menstrual
extractions.
Women interested in scheduling a menstrual extraction
can call 966-2135.
"Abortion is not an alternative to contraception,
Meginnis said. "We try. to get every girl who is having
intercourse on some form of contraception.
Meginnis noted, however, that an abortion is a valid
alternative if a girl becomes pregnant.
The menstrual extraction procedure represents another
lower-cost alternative to abortion in the very early time span
after a menstrual period is missed.

The opinions of 4,500 students on the pass-fail system will be surveyed today in a
questionnaire to be administered by the Student Information Network (SIN) for
Student Government (SG).
About 150 SIN members will go to every other door in all of the dormitories.
Granville Towers and sororities and fraternities between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The crucial issue on the questionnaire is w hether or not seven pass-fail hours per
semester should be allowed instead of four hours.
Last spring, the Faculty Council voted to limit the number of pass-fail hours to a
maximum of four, w ith the stipulation that the plan w ould be reconsidered again in
the fall before implementation.
The results of the questionnaire will be presented before the Faculty Council at its
next meeting on Oct. 19.
According to Richard Letchworth. assistant to Student Body President Ford
Runge and proponent of the seven-hours plan, "The effort is to measure the degrees
of support of our plan and the faculty's plan, so that w e will have some data to argue
from before the Faculty Council."
Letchworth said he felt this surv ey will carry greater importance than a similar
survey conducted last spring because of thelarger number of students being
questioned. The 4,500 students who will be given the questionnaire are about twice
the number of voters in the recent campus-wide elections.
If we get the same kind of support from a large number of students as we did last
spring, said Letchworth, "I feel we're on pretty solid ground when we say 'This is
what the students think'.
Letchworth plans to use the results of the survey to reach some sort of
compromise at the Faculty Council meeting.

said. He was referring to the other

306 units built during the '60s.
"Victory Village was built right after
World War II," Perry said, "and was
meant to stand only 10 years. Instead,
those prefabricated units have provided
cheap housing for years. They've been
kept as long as possible.
Julie Parker, temporary director of
married student housing, said a priority
list would be arranged due to the
reduction of housing units. Victory
Village residents will have top priority
for transfers to Odum Village. Parker
said.
Perry said plans for a new 300-unit
married student housing complex have
been put temporarily on hold due to
high construction costs. "If we built
now, the units would have to be off
campus and priced on the same rate as
local enterprises," Perry said. "Our
attraction now is on-campus location
and low costs. We don't want to change
that."
Perry said he feels w ithin two or three
years Chapel Hill will become part of
the buyers' market for apartments.
Surplus apartments will result in
decreased costs and increased benefits
to attract student tenants, he said.

formal rush is now in progress on campus.
With the new rush system in effect, even
"formal" rush is not as it used to be. Formal
simply means that houses will be expecting
rushees, and all the brothers will be present.
Rush times are from 7-10 p.m. tonight and
7-9 p.m. Wednesday night. During this time,
prospective rushees may visit as many or as
few houses as they care to and spend as much
time as they wish at any house.
Officials of the Inter-fraternity Council
stress that rushees who participate in formal
rush need not feel that they have to pledge
when this period ends. Rush is in effect
throughout the school year and pledging can
take place at any time.
Maps and other information concerning
rush is available at the IFC office, located in
Room 258, Suite B of the Carolina Union,
phone 933-2064.
Most fraternities are located within
walking distance of the campus. Finlcy Golf

taking a right directly after the Pines
