Remember when the North Carolina Tar Heels made a perilous journey into Cameron Indoor Stadium? Carolina managed to sneak away with a tight two-point victory after Bobby Jones stole an inbounds pass with scant seconds left to play and lay the ball in for the win. Sheer insanity amongst the Tar Heel faithful. Right al ter that happened, the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest stormed into Cameron and waltzed away with a 19 point upset of Duke's Blue Devils. Now that's real insanity. Tonight the Tar Heels travel to Winston-Salem for the first time since 1970 to meet Wake forest on the Deacons" home court. The last time Carolina played in Winston-Salem, the Heels lost 96-84, and since then. Wake has scheduled its home game against Carolina in the Greensboro Coliseum. - The gametime of the Atlantic Coast Conference match-up is set for 8 p.m. in front of a sell-out crowd of nearly 8,000 fans. There will be a preliminary game at 6 p.m. between the North Carolina and Wake Forest junior varsity teams. "Four days alter we beat Duke by two points at Durham, Wake went to the same court and whipped Duke by 19." says Tar Heel head coach Dean Smith. "That's proof enough that Wake Forest is capable of beating anyone. We face a real challenge on Wake's home court." Most ACC fans have heard it all before, one way or another. Any team in t he ACC. is capable of beating any other team in the ACC. or the top twenty for that matter, on any given night. ) JJ&U&&& Ij if UNIVERSITY MALL, jj CHAPEL HILL OJ " f n i 1 ! i Men's Shop Dollar Day Specials Thursday, Friday Saturday Suits I Special Group Sport Coats Special Group Reg. 90.00 105.00 115.00 120.00 130.00 140.00 150.00 Reg. Carolina has everything to lose if the game falls to the Deacons, including that number four ranking. After the Tar Heels defeated the Maryland Terrapins in Chapel Hill last Saturday, 82-73, Carolina sealed its hold on the national number four spot while firmly entrenching the Heels into se cond place in the ACC standings behind North Carolina State. The Tar Heels now have an overall record of 1 3 wins and only two defeats, both of those to State, while having a 5-1 record in the ACC. Wake Forest will be shooting to level off the Deacons league record at the .500 mark if they down the Heels. The Deacons have an ACC record of 2-3 plus an overall record of 9-6. Carolina has already won the initial meeting between the two rivals this season, "beating the Deacons by a deceptive score of 95-78. When the Tar Heels hosted Wake earlier this season, the Deacons manag ed to stay close most of the contest, mainly due to the outside shooting of guards Skip Brown and Tony Byers. Byers has been averaging 18.5 points a game for the Deacons so far this season, so don't be too surprised if Wake tries to beat Carolina from the out side. After all, worms do turn, but they sometimes get stepped on while they're going about it. Women c agers top arch rival UNC-G Carolina's female cagers muscled past arch-rival UNC-G. 54-44, Tuesday night in Carmichael Auditorium, to push the Heels' record to 3-1 and handed UNC-G its first defeat. Accented by tenacious defense, the Heels dominated the entire contest with junior Marsha Mann leading UNC with 20 points and 15 rebounds. "We looked likca different team tonight," said head coach Sue Cannon, recalling last week's lost to Winthrop College. "Defense was the name of the game, and we worked together." The Heels staggered UNC-G with a scrappy 2-1-2 zone. UNC never trailed the Lady Spartans and confined the Spartans' Rita Wiggs to nine points. The Greensboro club tied it at 23 early in the second half, but never threatened again, as the Heels opened up for a 17-point command with about 4:33 remaining in the game. . 1 OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOQQOOOOOOOOOOOOOOQOOOOOOO r1""" "" imimnj.ua. i i.. ,., ii i in ,11.11,1 ill ii ill ljiuijilih ami lumron -Jii 1.1 imiii .u lu I III umulil-H 1? 9 9 3 G o o e c g! o O I Of ; O ' Q o Of o !o I o o o o a S3 ii :3 3 3 3 '3 3 3 GLASS j O Lai U lfp4U u s Our Studio Representative Will be in Room 205 (Fouth Lounge of Student Union) 9-5 WEEKDAYS JAW. 28-FEB. 15 Pick up your proofs and place orders for prompt returns. e e s ! e e c e c c j i i 6 O O o o o o o o o o o ) o joooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo " I Cflassoifoeds FOR RENT 2 Bedroom ac mobile home available Feb. 2. $90.00 per month. Waldrop and Liquori were both clocked in 3:58,9. Waldrop was in third place in the final lap when he turned on the burners and caught Liquori in the final 30 yards.
