Sports Editor The High Point Panthers, coming from the furniture capital of the world, met an ignominious ending Wednesday at the hands of the Carolina baseball team. The Panthers lost 5-3 and thus became the eleventh victim of the season for the Tar Heels. This equals UNCs win total for last season. Designated hitter Jimmy Baldwin led Carolina -with a homer, a single and two RBl's while Bobby Guthrie smashed two doubles and scored three runs to push his team-leading totals to nine and 19 respectively. Carolina used three pitchers for the game, with Durwood Powell hurling hitless ball through the first three innings. Joe Howard, the first reliever, had his 0.00 ERA ruined in a two-run Panther sixth inning when he surrendered a 300-foot homerun to Dan Goins and a walk sandwiched between two singles. Mike Merritt Finished the game for the Tar Heels and received credit for the victory, his second of the season with no losses. The righthander was in no trouble until the ninth when High Point loaded the bases with two outs. He got out of the jam with only one run scoring as he forced Alan Brumfield to fly to centerfield. Carolina scored in each of the first three innings, slapping seven hits in the process. Baldwin knocked Guthrie in with two out in the first inning as he followed singles by Mike Wildersqn and Lindsey Ethridge. In the second frame, catcher Brad Storie led off with a double to center and scored on Tom Kennedy's single. A two-run third inning was highlighted by Baldwin's 355 foot shot into the scoreboard in leftfield. Guthrie scored before him on an infield out by Wilkerson. Carolina's last tally came in the fifth inning as Guthrie and Ethridge each hit doubles to produce another score. UNC leftfielder Early Jones continued his outstanding defensive play as he made two running diving catches to save two sure baschits. Carolina begins its ACC schedule tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Duke in Durham. LJ U hi!, II UU L3 Netters blitz To ledo, i host Amherst today J swiffifn ers for nationals by Kevin Darris Sports Writer Collegiate swimming makes its final splash this weekend, as the nation's finest swimmers compete for national honors in .the NCAA Championships at Long Beach, Calif. Carolina will be trying to score in the nationals for the first time in seven years. The Tar Heels have had a strong season so far, and scoring at Long Beach would. certainly end the season on a high note. If we can swim the way we did in the Easterns (at Princeton, NJ., three weeks ago)," Coach Pat Earey said, then we'll have had one of the finest seasons in a long time." Five UNC swimmers made the trip for the competition which starts today. Seniors Jike Southard an Jim Osborn, junior Dave Marlin. sophomore Karl Thiele and freshman Steve McDonald are the Tar Heels seeking All-America status. Jim Osborn is the Tar Heel with the best chance of scoring. His time of :5 1.12 in the 100 butterfly at Easterns is one of the top 10 times in the country, and his 1:54.39 in the 200 butterfly is in the top 12. Carolina xwill learn early if their preparation this season has been good enough. At noon (PDT) today, the event begins with the qualifyings in the 500 freestyle. Southard and McDonald swam well in the 500 freestyle all season, and could be the first Tar Heels to score. omen's tennis team meets Furman. in opener Carolina's women's tennis team begins its spring season today with a home match against Furman. The Tar Heels were undefeated in fall play, and have been practicing long and hard the last few weeks in preparation for today's match. "1 think we'll do well," Coach Frances Hogan said, "the girls have played well all spring and I'm expecting the same from them Thursday." -trklrlrkiHrkkkkkkli it Beth Hamilton will be the first one to find out if an edge has been gained. Furman's No. 1 player is freshman Mary Alice Nicholson who has pulled some upsets already this season. Hamilton, a transfer student from the University of Georgia, has played against Furman before (this is the first time for Carolina), but not against Nicholson. Other than Nicholson, Furman's strength is unknown. The Paladins have not been too strong in the past, but this year they had an influx of excellent freshmen, and could pose a problem for the Tar Heels. Jane Preyer, Nina Cloaninger, Jean Scot, Becky Garcia, and Stewart Smith will play singles, along with Hamilton. Hamilton and Preyer will team for one doubles, Cloaninger and Garcia in one, and Smith and Lillian Murray in the other. The match will be played on the courts behind Joyner and will start at 3 p.m. today. .Lacrosse at on Navy Field ! 1:50 -" ' tf - efc-- rfTT"SwM'li'i! Friday, Osborn swims in the 100 butterfly, Marlin in the 100 backstroke and Thiele in the 100 breaststroke. Four of the five will also compete in the 800 freestyle relay, but the coaches will decide that later. Southard and McDonald will swim in the 1650 freestyle. Marlin in the 200 backstroke, Thiele in the 200 breaststroke and Osborn in the 200 butterfly on Saturday. The qualifying races will be held at noon each day, with the championships at 7 p.m. by Susan Shackelford AssL Sports Editor Friendly tennis banter characterized UNCs ninth 9-0 blitz against the visiting northern netters of Toledo Wednesday afternoon. Carolina asserted the type of control over Coach John Trump's Toledo that has propelled UNC to the forefront of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels, now 9-1, are defending ACC champs and owners of the title for the last four years. We appreciate playing a top team like Carolina," said Trump after his young club on its spring break tour fell in all six singles. UNC is the toughest team we've met." In the singles play the visitors only managed to grab 1 1 games compared to 72 for the Heels. However, UNC sophomore Billy Brock had the only clean slate, defeating Randy Whately 6-0 in two straight sets. All-America co-captain Rich McKee reflected his usual even temper, stroking 6-2, 6-1 past Jim Davis, a somewhat sporadic, net-rusher.
