Yfednesday, Asr3 10. 1374 The Day Tar Heel TTD nirni gore uounsto (third of a jour part series) Baltimore seems as strong as ever. There are no real question marks on this team since almost every starting player has been an All-Star. They are the complete team. A great off-season trade with Cincinnati brought them Ross Grimsley who, along with last year's Cy Young winner Jim Palmer, could provide the Birds with the best righty-lefty combo in the league. Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally, almost perpetual 20-game winners, seem ready to do their usual thing win games consistently. The outfield is overloaded with talent. Al Bumbry (last year's Rookie of the Year) and Rich Coggins both hit well over .300. "Motormouth" Paul Blair and Don Baylor round out a superb outfield. Infield hitting power comes from Earl Williams, Boog Powell and Brooks Robinson, whose name has become synonymous with third base. It's no secret that Powell and Robinson will be out to show that they are the superstars they once were. At second is fiery Bobby Grich who is good with the glove and the bat, and defensive specialist Mark Belanger is at short. Along with effective relievers Grant Jackson and Bob Reynolds, the Orioles also have Tommy Davis, who is the best Designated Hitter in the league. New Boston manager Darrell Johnson will have to sort out the talent. He has the pleasurable task of picking four starting pitchers from a list of seven proven big names (Wise, Tiant, Lee, Drago, Moret, Marichal and Cleveland). All are pitchers that give Boston the deepest staff in the league. Boston has a good outfield, but not comparable to that of Baltimore. It looks like Bernie Carbo, Tommy Harper and Rich Miller will start. In the infield, Yaz is solid at first while Carlton Fisk is one of the American League's best catchers, but injuries to Rico Petrocelli and Doug Griffin along with the departure of Louis Aparicio and Orlando Cepeda illustrate the dependence of Boston on their youngsters. There is no doubt that the change of philosophy from a hitting to a pitching dominated team has strengthened the club. In fact, if aging vets like Dick McAuliffe and Petrocelli continue to shine, no one will notice the absence of Cepeda as the Designated Hitter. Milwaukee, Detroit and New York will be battling for third, but each team is too weak to be a contender. Cleveland, poor Cleveland. Rick Wlllenzlk and Fred Stern N omen's tennis Carolina's women's tennis team easily defeated UNC-G 9-0 Tuesday afternoon in Greensboro. UNC's singles winners were Beth Hamilton, Nina Cloaninger, Rebecca Garcia, Jean Scott, Stewart Smith and Lillian Murray. The winning doubles teams were Hamilton-Cloaninger, Garcia-Scott and Smith-Murray. frf g S g 4 , g g g ECYCLE THE DAILY TARHEEL u inesis Due? Let InStaoCopy help you meet that deadline! Despite heavy rains and a gusting wind. Wake managed a team score of 5 18 from their seven players. Curtis Strange led the way for Wake with a 71, followed by Jay Haas at 72. N.C. State posted a team total of 522 and was led by medlaist Ken Dye with a 70. UNC shot a team total of 542 with Skip Dunaway leading the way with a respectable 7 1. He was followed by Pete Wallenborn, 74; Brad Burris, 76; and Ted Cu!p at 76. Duke finished 10 strokes behind UNC with a 552. They were led by Bob Caprera with a 74. The second day of the tournament will be held in Raleigh on Wednesday. On Saturday the site moves to Durham and the windup takes place at Carolina on Sunday. Football Club No... the UNC Football Club is not a myth. In fact, the club scored a major v ictory recently when the Rams edged past old rival Duke. 7-6. in a game played on the Navy Field Astro-Turf. Duke took an early first quarter lead on a 40-yard post pattern connection from quarterback to wide receiver, but failed to convert the extra point after touchdown. The Rams finally scored midway in the fourth quarter when tailback Buddy Ratchford hurled a 30-yard option pass to wide receiver (they're very popular in these games) Richard Blalock for a touchdown and a tie score.
