"The 'Honing Stone Reader."
Warner Paperback Library. 222 pp.
$1.75.
Whether it's politics, judicial and prison
reform, rock music, soul music, teeny
bopping television idols, championship
chess, movie-making, Olympic swimming,
Chicano riots, aggression or personal
diaries, The 'Rolling Stone' Reader has
something to say about it. '
"Over the past three years no periodical
has achieved a more spectacular success with
New Journalism than Jann Wenner's
Rolling Stone," Tom Wolfe declares in his
book of last year. The New Journalism.
All 13 articles in the Reader were
previously published in Rolling Stone's
pages during 1970-73. Lord knows how the
editors picked these 13. 1 can't help thinking
about the superb stories they left out. Like
Tim Cahill's reportage on the Jesus
movement. Or Joe Eszterhas story on
menacing narcotics agents. And at least part
of Hunter Thompson's piece on Watergate
would have been nice.
Yet the result is informative and fun to
read despite the stories about such
commercialized apple-pie kids as Mark
Spitz and David Cassidy. .
Among the best articles in the Reader are
'Charlie Simpson's Apocalypse by
Eszterhas and 'St range Rumblings in Aztlan
by Thompson.
Charlie Simpson was one of a handful of
freaks in his native town, Harrisonville. Mo.
He was intelligent but not well-educated
though Henry David Thoreau was his hero.
Charlie grew tired of being treated as a
The Union Grove Old Time Tiddlers
Convention (this is the big one, folks) will
observe its golden anniversary this weekend
on Quaker Hills Farm, Union Grove, N.C.
Music, singing and clogging around the
clock will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday and
climax Saturday night with the world
championship fiddling competition.
Buddy Pendleton, a postman from
Virginia who plays in the bluegrass style,
-won the $1,000 top fiddling award last year
second-rate human by the townspeople, so
he pulled out his " M-I semi-automatic
carbine and murdered three innocent
persons two cops and a banker. Then he
blew off his own head.
' Eszterhas begins Charlie's tale with a vivid
description of the town and its inhabitants.
"Right after the sun comes up, first thing
folks do around Harrisonville, Mo. is go up
to the barn to see if the mare is still there.
Then he details Simpson's violence and
analyzes his problems.
Tension builds between young long-hairs
and older people when laws like one
prohibiting assemblies of three or more
persons in the town square are instituted.
"The hippies were scaring business away.
Harrisonville just couldn't sit around and let
itself get overrun," the fire chief says.
The hippies plan an anti-Vietnam War
rally in the square on a Saturday. But
Charlie goes wild and does his mad-dog
.dance. Forced to avoid town for awhile, the
freaks camp in nearby woods. "There was
blood in those people's eyes," Charlie's
friend, Rise Risner, says. "It was like we'd all
pulled that trigger ..."
Finally, Eszterhas brings himself into the
story. He describes his method of slicking
back his hair and sticking a cigar between his
teeth to communicate with the town's pro
establishment citizens. Then he washes his
hair, discards the cigar and dons jeans and a
leather jacket to talk to the freaks. His story
ends as he sits around a campfire drinking
wine and smoking pot, listening to Charlie's
friends declare him a martyr because killing
"was a far-out thing to do." Eszterhas brings
greets
and will be returning to defend his title.
More than $5,000 in prizes will also be
awarded to the top old time and bluegrass
ensembles and to the best individual
musicians.
J. Pierce VanHoy, program director,
decided in 1924 to hold a fiddling shindig to
up the Kent State murders two years earlier,
where the establishment did a mad-dog
dance themselves.
'Strange Rumblings in Aztlan centers on
Hunter Thompson's coverage of the 1971
killings of Los Angeles Times reporter
Ruben Salazar in a Chicano-owned bar in
East L.A. Salazar was sitting peacefully
when a tear-gas bomb struck him in the
head. Thompson swears it was murder by the
police and sets out to show why. The truth
radiates as he fools a policeman on the
phone, lying and pretending to be unaware
of what he has been covering for weeks.
Thompson proves his point, hangs up the
phone and puts down his pen.
Rolling Stone, since its debut in 1967, has
always excelled in focusing on the ominous,
the unfair and the honestly bizarre aspects of
America. During the past two years,
however, incidents not so exclusively hip
have been covered, apparently in an effort to
grasp the full pulse of young America. The
result: a rash of Mark Spitz, David Cassidy
and, though not in this collection, Liza
Minnelli and Alice Cooper tales.
'Naked Lunch Box: The David Cassidy
Story by Robin Green is ridiculously funny.
Green describes those who idolize David as
1 1- to 16-year-olds with "twitchy thighs and
sticky seats." She quotes a 16-year-old
wearing a tight sweater and hot pants at
Cassidy's Madison Square Garden concert.
"1 hope I brought enough Kleenex," the
girl says. "Til probably cry. I cried when I
got my ticket.'
The 'Rolling Stone' Reader is truly a
varied work of some brilliance, some
dullness, some trivia and some profundity.
fiddlers
raise money for Union Grove School. In
1970, the festival split into two separate
events.
The original fiddlers convention is this
weekend. A second festival will be held
Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26 in
Union Grove.
