The Daily Tar Heel 6 T 9 n SiiH CD WS .V Thursday, April 13, 1974 T O T1 II if , ? 1 ir k 'III' 13 LJ by Harvey Elliott Drsma Critic David Rabe's Sticks and Bones is the story of a pleasant American family in which Ozzie remains nostalgic, Harriet makes fudge and Ricky plays guitar. Into this household walks David, an uneasy and unpleasant son blinded in Vietnam. The Playmakers have taken on the development of this pleasant American family and what emerges is an expertly executed piece of stagecraft, performed with a sure and sometimes brilliant feeling for stylization. Sticks and Bones is a difficult play to stage, and it's much to director Duane Sidden's credit that he has managed to fascinate and horrify us to just the right AmctSoEi' set Baubles, bangles, bright beads and even flying lessons are among the items and services to be sold at the first annual "Everything Goes" auction Saturday, sponsored by the Chapel Hill Animal Protection Society (APS). Starting at 10 a.m. at the old red brick factory in Carrboro, auctioneers Marvin Saltzman of the UNC Art Department and Dennis Donovan of the UNC English Department will alternate throughout the day. i Thanks, see you then. f degree at just the right times. What he's dealing with is a simple, clean-living little group disrupted by something ugly and unwanted. David is haunted by his memories, the war and the girl he left behind. Harriet recommends Ezy Sleep, for "the sleep you need . . . the sleep you remember. Ozzie tries to understand his son, just as he tries to play Ricky's guitar, and with the same amount of patience. All they're really waiting for is "that fine bright day coming when we'll all be a family again." Margaret Burns is a wonder as Harriet. The ideal American housewife and mother trots off to the kitchen for warm milk at the slightest provocation. She joshes with her son and husband and marches around the sofa with tiny coy steps, flirting, bickering and forever smiling. You can even hear the smile in Burns' voice as later, you can fleetingly hear the fear. Harriet is simple; she doesn't want much only stability and normalcy. Burns is a Harriet who says, "I don't understand," when things become a little confusing, but she says it in the same tone in which she would say "Now, don't be difficult," and then forgets it. Hers is a performance which defines the limits and tone set by director Sidden and which guides the other players through. Greg Vines plays Rick with such a consistent naivete that, when he and Harriet iLflurivDlii NB8T i mi 3IG HY CA The brewers of Budweiser, in coopera tion with ABC Radio, asked me to remind you that April 22-27 is National College "Pitch In!" Week. All week, all over America, students like you will be filling up litter cans like me. If there's an official "Pitch In!" Week program in your campus community, join up. If there isn't, you can still support the national effort. Just pick up any litter in your path next week and bring it to me. ANHEUSER-BUSCH, INC. ST. There are difficulties with Ozzie's role, partly in the conception and partly in the realization. Joe Simmons seems to be rushing through a little too fast, not allowing the stylization to impose itself on Ozzie. He is the first, however, to look for explanations and to become affected by David, and he's not allowed the time for family satire allotted to Harriet and Ricky. Almost immediately, Ozzie is required to move from comedy to confusion and frustration, and back again several times. It's a shift which isn't consistently handled and which may be textually irremediable, but a little more attention to timing and pace would help. David Shepherd is fine in David's role as the catalyst who isn't a comedian like the others. His bitterness and rage, as well as his manipulation of the family, are subtle and well-defined. His only problems are the playwright's to begin with, and Shepherd doesn't accent them. The whole scene is helped tremendously by David Downing's evocative split-level set, with David's stark bedroom becoming whatever it need be, and the parents' modern living room inescapably what it is. The intimacy of the Graham Memorial Lounge makes a convincing domicile and, frighteningly, with Sticks and Bones, there are many who could feel quite at home. 1 iff -p WMjfife 0 yy f - , - .. ii .11. i . iicri f ,i7ni"' ii jr r fr, yh Vh 1 " . r 3ri t !V7 J w I ft ::WJL' in liLlLLJJ hi in Limited time offer.
