PaschaSI hurled his gem before a large shirt-sleeved crowd at Bosharr.er Stadium in the first game of a Sunday afternoon douhleheader against the University of Virginia. Carolina won the game 5-0, but really got all they needed in the first inning when Early Jones reached first on an error, stole second, took third cn Dale Lydecker's infield single and scored on Bobby Guthrie's sacrifice fly to right. Paschali's bid for a no-hitter was spoiled in the fourth inning when Virginia catcher Dan Bernstein singled to left. Paschall faced only 24 batters in the seven-inning game, walked three and struck out five. The Tar Heels added a run in the second as Designated Hitter Steve Rackley walked, took second on an infield out, and scored on firstbaseman Chris Kupec's single up the middle. In the fourth frame, Carolina scored a pair of insurance runs. Tom Kennedy led all hitters with a perfect three for three day performance at the plate. The fifth and final run came in the seventh when Lydecker scored on a single by Rackley. uniniinieFS small dh ! 3 by Jim Thomas Sports Writer Ailing Tony Waldrop ignored an ear infection Saturday night to win the half mile at the Big Three meet in Raleigh. Waldrop, the world indoor record holder in the mile, easily won the 800-yard event in 1:50.9. Although it was a fine performance for a sick runner, Waldrop was disappointed in his last lap of 52. 1 . He made up for his "slow" time by running a 47.7 third leg on North Carolina's victorious mile relay team (3:19.5). The UNC star will run his first outdoor mile this year Saturday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. North Carolina won the team title with 75 points while N.C. State had 58 and Duke 57. Most of Carolina's points came in bunches as the Tar Heels won three of four places in the long jump, triple jump and javelin and swept all four places in the discus. Sam Beasley won the long jump with 23 IVA while Dennis Quick came in second with his best effort of the season, 23-5, and Monty Burlingame was fourth with 21-5. Beasley also captured the triple jump with a 45-8VS, edging teammates Clay White (45 6$) and Fred Woltz (45 $). Jeff Gorski recovered from a sore leg to win the javelin with a throw of 220-5'$, Pete LaRochell was second at 207-11 and Gil -,-,.-.-.".-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.;.-.-.-.v-.-,-.-"-V C" Golf The ACC Golf Tournament gets underway Monday at the Carolina Trace Golf Course near Sanford as Wake Forest seeks its eighth straight ACC golf title. The event is a three-day tourney with ail 54 holes taking place at Carolina Trace. The perrenial ACC champs and nationally ranked Deacons have already won four tournaments this season, including a solid 32-shot margin over N.C. State last week in the Big Four Championship. The UNC Golf Team will be trying to better its distant third place finish in the Big Four. Coach Mike McLeod said he was more optimistic about the ACC Tournament because "the players seem to be hitting their stride at this time of the year." "We are hoping to give both Wake and State more of a challenge this time and we are confident of our chances," McLeod added. The seven players McLeod will use for the tourney are: Skip Dunaway, Sid Aldrid.ge, Brad Burris, Pete Wallenborn, Mark Andrew, Gig Hilton and freshman standout Scott Humrickhouse. The Heels outlasted tough Maryland Saturday afternoon 6-5 in a 14-inning marathon that started out like a circus of errors bat turned into a tight struggle. Carolina opened scoring in the second inning when Steve Rackley doubled and scored on a sharp single to left by Lindsey Ethridge, who later drove in the game winner with a towering sacrifice fly to deep left in the bottom of the 14th inning. Maryland rallied with four runs in the top of the fourth, aided by two wild throws and three singles. But the Heels were not to be denied. They came back to tie the game 4-4 in the same inning. The Terrapins got another run off UNC starter John Danneman in the top of the fifth and he retired to the locker room, with none out in the fifthArrowood came on and did a masterful relief job over the final 10 innings, allowing the Terps no runs on only five hits. The game was sent into extra innings when Carolina tied it again at 5-5 in their half of the eighth. Rackley scored on Jinmy Baldwin's clutch two-out double down the leftfield line. Carolina assured themselves of at least a shot at the second place seeding in the upcoming ACC tourney with their 6-5 victory in the second game of the Virginia double-header. The Heels were down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh but rallied on Mike Wilkerson's clutch 2-run single to right center that ended the ballgame. Guthrie had a 2-run homer, a triple, and three RBI's to lead Carolina's hitting. m Vance fourth at 191-1. Vance also won the discus with 153-7'i, followed closely by Terry Taylor (152-4), Lee McLaughlin ( 1 50-10) and Lee Califf ( 143-5).
