(Staff photo by Bill Welch) by Elliott Warnock Sports Editor Have you ever noticed how nobody's written a romantic song about Pittsburgh? After all, every section of the country has had a song written about it . . . California has had more than its share of love songs . . . The Allman Brothers, Livingstone and James Taylor have all done songs about Carolina. But Pittsburgh? What would you call it ... Lost My Heart in a Pittsburgh Steel Vat! One of the reasons might be that Pittsburgh is just not that sort of town which inspires lovely thoughts. Take for example the Pittsburgh Pirates . . . the first part of their batting order is named Murderer's Row, not exactly the sort of guys you would take home to mom. How about the Steelers? Mean Joe Greene . . . you know, the whole gang . . . they don't conjure to mind hearts and flowers. Then, there are the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers have this running back named Tony Dorsett, who as a sophomore has already set a new school career rushing record. Right . . . in one season and three games, Dorsett is the best running back in Pitt history with 1994 yards. He rushed for 1686 yards as a freshman, and gained 308 yards in three games this year. A little careful addition will show Dorsett needs only six more yards to become the first 2,000-yard rusher in Pitt's history. Dorsett gets his chance today at 1:30 p.m. when he and the Panthers square off with the North Carolina Tar Heels in Kenan Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two schools, but not the first meeting between UNC head coach Bill Dooley and Pitt mentor Johnny Majors. The two coaches worked together at Dooley's alma mater of Mississippi State. Dooley was the head freshman coach and Majors was the head of the Miss. St. B' team. When the two teams played each other in practice scrimmages, the games were dubbed Bowl Games'. Majors considers Dooley the closest friend he has in the nation's football coaching ranks and vice versa, but as Majors put it earlier this week, "Our friendship ends Saturday at 1:30." Dooley shows a lot of respect when talking about the Pitt visitors, comparing their defense with the Maryland team that stopped the Tar Heels last week in College Park. "After looking at films, I've found that Pitt is just as big and strong as Maryland," says Dooley. "Pitt slugged it out with a powerful team like Southern Cal last week and held its own." Pitt led most of the USC game, 7-3, but the Trojans rallied with two last quarter touchdowns for a 16-7 win. Carolina had its own troubles last week when the Heels lost their first game of the season to tough Maryland. The loss gave Carolina a 2-1 record. Pitt is currently 2-1 after beating Florida State and Georgia Tech.
