Dooley commented, MI expect full well the State football players will be ready to play, just as I expect full well that our players will be ready to play." State, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. It's safe to say that the UNC-NCSU rivalry has taken its place at the top of the list of priorities for most sports fans at Carolina. After all, revenge is sweet, and it's hard to forget the 28-26 loss to State in Carter Stadium last fall, plus the three straight losses Carolina's basketball team has taken at the hands of State. v ! : X. Holtz went to State in 1972 and lost to Dooley again in Chapel Hill by one point, 34-33. State finally got its way in 1 973, taking the win in Carter, 28-26. So in three games, the total point spread was four points. Holtz is proud of the fact his State team has never lost at home, never lost at night, and never lost wearing red game jerseys. ... State will not be playing at home, will not be playing at night, and will not be wearing red game jerseys. And another little note . . . Holtz has never won in Kenan Stadium. Holtz wants to win the game, so does Dooley, and the desire to win has created some tension between the two. As Holtz said, "It's a natural thing to feel like that. It's a big game between these two schools. It wasn't like this when I was at William and Mary; I came down here to play once; 1 don't think we recruited against each other all that much. But now, we're playing in the same conference." As Dooley put it, No matter what the records or the rankings of the two teams, this is always a big game. There is a lot of emotion involved." Emotion aside, Dooley thinks that the toughest defensive team will be the winner. "The game will be decided by defense," he staged. The team that plays the best on defense will win the game." Dooley continued, "I have confidence in our defense." Holtz thinks steady, solid play will be the key. "The team that makes the fewest mistakes Saturday will win the game," said Holtz, "I am sure we will play up to our capabilities." Holtz went on to say of the Tar Heels, They make very few mistakes," citing UNC quarterback Chris Kupec and the Carolina running backs as main reasons for the Heels' stability. There is an extra goal at stake for this game. If State wins, it will be the 15th straight ACC win for Holtz and he will tie Dooley's record.setin 1972. The last ACC game Holtz lost was to Carolina, 1972 in Kenan Stadium. Little doubt that this is the game.
