Reports 'good progress' in Moscow
in $4 million heist S

CHICAGO A security guard who was
on duty when burglars made off with more
than $4 million from an Armored Express
Co. vault was arrested Sunday and charged
with participation in the theft.
Marrera, described by U.S. Attorney
James R. Thompson, as a key to the whole
thing, had been sought since Tuesday when
he flunked a lie detector test, was fired by
Armored Express and then disappeared.
He was arrested on a federal warrant
obtained Friday charging him with bank
larceny, burglary and illegal use of explosive
devices. Marrera, hired by the company two
months ago, was described as the insider
who took part in the theft last weekend of
$4,300,000, the largest cash burglary in
American criminal history.
Still sought and the subject of a
nationwide federal alert was Charles
Marzano, 42, an adept safecracker and an
expert at circumventing sensitive security
alarm systems. Marzano, who , was
questioned last year in an $800,000 jewel
robbery, was believed to have fled Chicago.
Police and FBI agents closed in on
Marrera in the early morning hours at the
apartment of Mathew Sperduto. Sperduto's
wife answered the doorbell and
acknowledged Marrera was in the apartment
but was sleeping.
Police Sgt. Thomas Kelly said she left the
doorway, apparently to awaken Marrera,
but that Sperduto arrived and demanded to
see an arrest warrant. When police said the
warrant, was in the hands of the feds,
Sperduto ordered police to leave the
premises.
Two U.S. marshals sped to the Sperduto
apartment with a warrant and Marrera,
completely dressed by this time in a mod
maroon suit with shiny studs, accompanied
the officers to a Chicago police station for
questioning. He later was transferred to a
federal lockup.

Secretary of State Henry Kissinger flew
Sunday from Moscow to New Delhi for a
fence-mending mission and was greeted by
Communist demonstrators shouting,
"Down with KissingerP
Kissinger reported "good progress" on
nuclear arms limitations and improvement
of U.S.-Soviet relations during his four days
of talks in Moscow, where he helped arrange
a summit meeting for Nov. 23-24 between
President Ford and Communist party
General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev.
Kissinger is the first high-ranking
American to visit India since Indo-U-S.
relations turned sour during the India
Pakistan war in 1971, when the United
States made a tilt toward Pakistan.

WASHINGTON E. Howard Hunt Jr.,
member of the White House plumbers"and
mastermind of the 1971 Ellsberg and 1972
Watergate burglaries, takes the stand
M onday as the government's second witness
in the lengthy conspiracy trial.
Hunt, a long-time CIA agent before
joining the White House staff in 1971, was
convicted in the original Watergate trial in
January, 1973, and now is free pending
appeal. He received immunity in exchange
for his testimony in last summer's trial in the
break-in of the office of Pentagon Papers
defendant Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist.

Ben-Veniste, said he did not believe both
sides would complete their examination of
the former spy-novelist in one day. Defense
lawyers said, however, they had little to ask
him.
During one of . the frequent clashes
between prosecution and defense lawyers
Friday, chief trial prosecutor James F. Neal
refused to say who would follow Hunt to the
stand.

House chief of staff H.R. Haldeman, one of
the five defendants, said he would protest the
prosecution's request to make Hunt a "court
witness."

In a brief statement Kissinger said that
Indo-U.S. relations had already improved
considerably.

the world had rediscovered their common
purpose and have exchanged ideas on an
ever increasing range of topics." About 200
members of the pro-Moscow Communist
Party of India staged a noisy demonstration
outside the airport gates. Waving red flags,
the demonstrators shouted "Down with
Kissingert" "Murderer of the late Chilean
Marxist President Salvador Allende!" and
"Builder of bases in the Indian Ocean!"
Kissinger will confer Monday with Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi. He is expected to
ask Gandhi for assurances that India will not
barter her new-found nuclear expertise to
Arab nations for oil and food an exchange
Kissinger fears would start a dangerous arms
race in West Asia.
The two leaders are also expected to
discuss the sensitive topic of renewed U.S.
food aid to India and the equally touchy
question of America's intention to build a
naval base on the Indian Ocean atoll of

economic commission to expedite A merican
investment in India and arrange scientific
and cultural exchanges.
In Moscow, a joint communique issued at
the end of Kissinger's visit said the United
States and the Soviet Union had useful
exchanges on nuclear arms limitation but
indicated a breakthrough is yet to come.
"Particular attention was given to the
problem of the further limitation of strategic
arms." the communique said.
Kissinger and Brehncv conferred for
seven and one-half hours Saturday night and
American officials said almost the entire
time was spent discussing arms limitations.
The communique said both sides had a
"fundamental understanding" to work out a
10-year agreement on missile cutbacks.
But it added that discussions on these
matters will continue.
On leaving Moscow, Kissinger said in an
airport statement. "The talks were wide
ranging, covering all issues in Soviet
American relations and international
affairs."
"I am well satisfied with the outcome of
the talks and l think that good progress was
made."
