ThtC.HyTf:rB"l Tussiry. Hcrtjr.Ssr 5, 1-74 Michael -.Fawcett- A as, poor Billy . . . One more baseball memory, please before the winter comes It must have been pretty cold in Chicago on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The wind undoubtedly was blowing in from Lake Michigan, and people probably pulled their overcoats around themselves and buttoned them. in the Wrigley Field offices of the Chicago Cubs, the temperature must have been lower stilL For on this day, Billy Williams was traded to the Oakland A's for Bob Locker, Darold Knowles and Manny Trillo, thus ending fourteen memorable Chicago baseball years. And around noon that day, word came that Pat Pieper, the Cubs public-address announcer since 1916, had passed away. His age, 1 recall, was in the late 8r. No, I'm not sad that Williams was traded. He was no longer the player he had been, and at 36 he was the oldest player on a team that is emphasizing youth (except in its relief corps; Locker and Knowles are both over 30). But at a time like this, one can't help but stop and remember how it was in another time, when Billy Williams was still a very young man. "Billy Williams in left" how many times have I heard that phrase? Living in the Chicago suburbs, we had the opportunity to see all of the Cubs' home games and most of their road games on TV, because owner Phil Wrigley felt that with only daytime baseball, he didn't need a blackout. For us, and for most Cub fans, the name Williams suggested two images: the patient defender, crouched in front of the ivy-covered walls of Wrigley Field, making the spectacular catch or even the routine one with a special competence, a quiet ability that N.L. hitters respected; and the strapping left-handed hitter. whose classic, swing gave him the nickname "Sweet Billy." How many times, indeed, have 1 seen that facile swing, watched the ball sail over the right field bleachers into Sheffield Avenue, seen that blue No. 26 flash in the sun as Billy was congratulated by Ron Santo and Ernie Banks, who followed him in the batting order? Ask any Cub fan; they've all seen it countless times. Williams hit .300 for clubs that were in seventh, eighth, ninth and even tenth place. He fielded magnificently, even though his job rivalled that of Carl Yastrzemski, emperor of the Green Monster of Fenway, in difficulty. And most of all, he played every day. His string of over 900 consecutive games played, set.bctween 1963 and 1970, is a National League record and one of the longest such streaks ever. All through the years of Cub non-contention, all through the futile years under Leo Durocher when the Cubs missed the pennant just barely three different times, even during 1972 when his skills were finally recognized Billy Leo Williams stayed the same man, quiet and professional, that he hail been at the start. Now he's with the A's, and the people of Chicago, who have loved him as they had loved only Ernie Banks, know that he will probably receive the goal he fought for and never got in those fourteen miserable seasons the playoffs, maybe the World Series, perhaps even a World Championship. Whether he does well or ill, Billy Williams has all the class you could k want. ' . But as 1 said, Pat Pieper died last Wednesday. If you aren't a Cub fan, that means little, but to those of all ages who remember his crisp, garbled "Tention. Tention please," something will be missing in Wrigley next year. Pat Pieper is dead, and Billy Williams is gone but the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field, which brought them together for a while, will go on and on and on. That's baseball, you might say. Carolina sports briefs The UNC women field hockey team defeated Campbell College 4-0 Monday in a match in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels led at the half 2-0 on goals by Kathy Burwell and Vicki Greenwood. Greenwood scored again in the second half along with Laurie Woodward. Carolina is now 3-3-1 for the season. Carolina and Maryland played to a 0-0 tie in a soccer match played in College Park, Md. The Terps totally dominated the match offensively, outshooting UNC 30-6. Carolina goalie Mark Berson led the Tar Heel defense by making 11 saves. A 71 r RALEIGH (UPI North Carolina State coach Lou Holtz and Duke coach Mike McGec say things went pretty much as planned for their teams over the weekend, but North Carolina mentor Bill Dooley concedes "it took us a long time to catch on." Nonetheless, the end result was the same as all three teams rebounded from losses in the previous week to win Saturday. State whipped South Carolina 42-27, Duke shut out Georgia Tech 9-0 and the Tar Heels bounced Virginia 24-10. Ckmson coach Red Parker says fans "might have been in shock because we were the favorite for the first time this year," but the Tigers still rolled to a 21-9 win over Wake Forest. For the winless Deacons, it wasn't all dismal . . . they scored for the first time in six games. League-leading Maryland was less fortunate, with the 12th-ranked Terps dropping a 24-17 decision to eighth-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions next weekend face another Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, North Carolina State (4-2, 7-2). Air Force sinks Navy in 'campus classic' by l.'.ike Shadroui Sports Writer The Air Force Aces met the Navy Anchor Cankers in the annual UNC ROTC football classic and this year the Flyboys came out on top 27-2. The traditional battle, played by Carolina tag rules with 30 minute halves, is a high point in the two units' athletic programs and -always brings out the fierce inter-service hatred that is the true mark of any dedicated military jock. i i O' (55) (Sol (56) yj) n3 NMl cc The Sailors won last year's debacle but in 1974 the jet jocks were not to be denied. Under the guidance of head coach Major "Bulldog" James Speight (a football star at ECU) the Air Force utilized a dual quarter back system that scored almost at will against Navy. Air Force opened the scoring on an Avent to Cothren to Chappell to Bernard scoring play that covered 50 yards. In the second half Navy scored an early safety closing the gap to four. But the Aces retaliated quickly with three touchdowns to put the game on ice. fr3 , "Dr. Bruce" Chappell rolled around end, ran 30 yards and hit Mike Shadroui with a perfect strike for the first score. On the Aces next possession he went to Toni Bernard. Bernard lept between two defenders and made a spectacular catch for his second T.D. of the day. Dave "the Pollock" Skalski turned an interception into a T.D. to round out the scoring. The win gives the Air Force a 2-1 edge in the series. Also for the record books was the appearance of Lee Minor. Lee's debut marked the first time in the classic's history that a female had played for either team. SAIL CCS "I felt it would be our best offensive performance of the season," said Holtz after the Wolfpack had conquered South Carolina. "We're getting more consistent, not making as many mistakes. We're on the verge of becoming a very good offensive football team." McGee said the Blue Devils approach to the Georgia Tech game "and every ether game is to shut out the opponent. We succeeded, which was a great joy for our squad." The Duke defense held Tech to four first downs through the third quarter, scored on a safety when linebacker Keith Stoneback caught Yellow Jacket quarterback Rudy Allen in the end zone and generally put up a solid -wall in front of a normally potent wishbone offense. Fullback Tony Benjamin scored the only Blue Devil touchdown on ai one-yard plunge as Tech suffered its first shutout in 10 years. ; After Dooley's Tar Heels caught on, in? other words, after four lost fumbles, Carolina had few problems against Virginia.; Quarterback Chris Kupec ran seven yardV for one touchdown and passed 44 yards to Jimmy Jerome for another as North', Carolina strengthened its grip on second place in the ACC. 17 Bench warmers & Fireside Comforters All Color Bk Racing Cars Octopus.
