Two running plays later the war cry flew from section 14 of Kenan Stadium, "Up the Middle, Up the Middle." Another fan shook his fist and yelled, "Yeah, run it, Dooley. Come on, surprise us." For a few rows around the fans laughed and poured more drinks. College football, what better way to spend a college afternoon. What you have to understand about Section 14 is that Section 14 is special. Not your average fans, screaming and yelling when Carolina performs well and silently grumbling when the Heels failed. No, section 14 was different. Located between the goal line arid the ten yard line on the student side, Section 14 was full of crazies. Oh, there were a few normals in the crowd. The coats and ties were there, even in the 80 degree heat of November 2, and some girls came in their Saturday best, dolled up in high heels and wool. But then, who is to argue with tradition? Section 14 made this writer's day. The UNC-Virginia game was not one of your excitement packed type of a football game. Defense, or lack of offense, seemed to be the predominant factor. The game was slow and lackluster. Even WCHL's Woody Durham must have been having trouble making the UNC-Virginia game exciting. The bourbon was being poured in row GG as Chris Kupec dropped back to throw the first pass. A guy with long brown hair and blue jeans stood up and yelled, "Hey, you can't dothat, Dooley. What's the matter with youT Then turning to the row behind him, he said, "Isn't Carolina supposed to wait until the fourth quarter, behind by two touchdowns, before they throw the ball?' At halftime, with Carolina ahead 7-3, someone from row FF philosophied, "Dooley must be betting on the point spread." A friend said, "Naw, too dangerous betting on Carolina. Even if you're the head coach." The cheerleaders were getting hard to take. All that wasted enthusiasm was wearing a little thin. Section 14 didn't need a cheerleader, they took care of all that nonsense themselves. In the third quarter the Tar Heels lined up for a field goal. Someone yelled, "Five bucks and 4-1 odds says he misses." "You're on," came an angry coat and tie, reply. The kick was bad. Section 14 went into hysterics as the five dollars came up the rows, "Never bet on Carolina on a field goal." Wingback Jimmy Jerome was wide open as he caught the perfect pass from Kupec, 44 yards and a touchdown. A voice lifted from the crowd, "Slap me, I don't believe it. What a surprise. Praise be to God." Remembering the State game, a chorus followed with, "Onside kick, onside kick. Come on, Dooley, show us your stuff." The game settled down again, and as it wore down to the 24-10 final score, shouts of "Up the Middle, Up the Middle. Four yards and a cloud of dust. Hi-yo silver away," faded out. Some say this sort of sarcasm is unnecessary at football games. Not so, the sarcastic fan is only a humourist who demands perfection on the football field. Got a lot of pride in Section 14. Hosting the Heels at 1 p.m., the earliest starting time on the east coast, will be the Clemson Tigers. The Tigers are currently 44 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina holds a 5-3 overall record and is 3-1 in theACC. When the Tigers have been good, they EooteF by Bill Kay Sports Writer Coming off a 0-0 tie against Maryland which literally took the Terps out of contention for the ACC crown, the Carolina varsity booters take on arch-rival Duke in Durham today in its final match of the season. Game time is 3 p.m. Referring to the Maryland game Assistant Coach Kip Ward said, "We were in it the whole way. It was a tremendous effort by a UNC team which has had to battle for everything this year." HIaiFFleFS North Carolina will try to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday when the Tar Heels run in the District III Championships at Greenville, S.C. Freshman Ralph King led UNC to a third place finish in the ACC Championships last weekend at the Duke golf course. King finished second in the individual race as Duke's Scott Eden won the title for the second year in a row. Maryland dethroned defending ACC champion Duke to win the team crown. ' The NCAA is composed of 10 districts. The top six teams in each district and the top 1 2 individuals not on those teams qualify for the nationals. Over 30 teams will be competing on the Furman campus this weekend. District III encompasses the toughest region in the country. Last year District 111 have been very, very good; but when they have been bad, they have been horrible. Nursery rhymes aside, Clemson has been blitzed by three of the Tigers four opponents; Texas A&M (24-0), N.C State (31-0) and Maryland (41-0). But clawing a little deeper, Clemson produced shows of strength against Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. Two weeks ago in Knoxville, Clemson led most of the final quarter against Tennessee, but floundered in the waning seconds of the game as to face Duake today It was truly a moral victory for UNC and the defense was exceptional as Mark Berson registered his fifth shutout of the year. "Nothing could get the squad better prepared for Duke than a victory over State and a hard earned tie against Maryland," Ward said. If Carolina defeats Duke they wind up the ACC campaign with a 2-2-1 record, equalling last year's mark. Duke's ACC record stands at 1-3. UNCs overall record is 4-3-3 and to end the year 5-3-3 considering the setbacks the team has incurred would be an in District had nine of the 15 Ail-Americans in cross countryWestern Kentucky's Nick Rose is favored to win the NCAA individual title. Rose is the defending District HI champion and finished second in the nation last year. Top teams in the field' are Western Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, William & Mary, Maryland, Duke and Carolina. Western Kentucky finished in the top five in the nation last year. Tennessee was the national champion two years ago. UNC coach Bill Lam rates Maryland and Duke as the third and fourth best teams in the district. So there you sit, saying to yourself, "Clemson's 4-A and Carolina is 5-3 .. so where's the big challenge?"; Aha, Clemson is unbeaten at home. Duke, Georgia and Tech all felt the sting of the Death Valley curse. Take that one-point Tennessee win, put it in Clemson, S.C. and see how long it would hold up. And while Clemson is unbeaten at home, the Tar Heels have yet to win accomplishment. ' This is the final match for seniors Mark Berson, Mark Baldwin, Steve Dawson, Tracey Jones, David Taylor and Rick Culberson. Culberson is expected back for Duke having partially recovered from torn ligaments and should be an added incentive. ' Having succumbed last year to Duke 2-1 this game has even more meaning. "The Duke game, being the final match of the year, means a lot to both teams," Head Coach Marvin Allen said. "Both teams are evenly matched and it should be an exciting contest." UNCs only road to victory was against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, To add to Carolina's troubles, Clemson runs a veer offense, and does a pretty good job with it. While the Tigers haven't produced offensive figures of gargantuan stature, they seem to come up with the yards in Death Valley when it counts. Leading the Clemson attack is quarterback Mark Fellers, who has passed for 431 yards and six T.D.s. Tight end Bennie Cunningham has caught five of those six touchdown passes and is the Tiger's leading receiver as well as the most fearsome member of the squad. A crowd of at least 40,000 is expected ancf the Tigers will undoubtedly be out to impress the home town folks. They have so far this year. Carolina will be out to impress the bowl scouts (i.e., the Sun Bowl representatives who offered UNC a bid), and prove that the Heels can win on the road.
