Theatre Critic
The Carolina Readers' Theatre has abbreviated its name to CRT and abandoned
all efforts to present readers' theatre-style offerings. The Enchanted represented
this weekend in cooperation with the Carolina Union was such a slipshod
production that it is hard to believe that the CRT has the nerve to charge admission,
let alone consider itself professional. noT
Because the players no longer hide behind black books in the traditional CRT
style, one must assume that this show is to be judged strictly as a theatrical offering.
Although one could only hope otherwise, even before The Enchanted Tree began
in Gerrard Hall on Saturday night, the quality of the entire presentation was evident

in the set, for which no designer took credit Three folding screens with poorly
painted decorations were hardly adequate. The backers of the CRT must not be
aware of the money which they are wasting on trash.
The script, an original adaptation of an authentic Commedia del Arte scenario"
by William M. Hardy, was so incredibly puerile and disgustingly trite that even the
sometimes appreciative audience groaned. Any professional attempt to redo a
Commedia script in the 1970s must surely be compared to Jim Dale's adaptation of
Les Fourberies de Scapin, and Hardy's offering falls embarrassingly short of
Scapino. In fact, this third-rate collection of hackneyed gags and silly rhymes
cannot even be compared to the 1972 Playmaker production of Servant of Two
Masters.
The story is typical Commedia: Arlecchino, in love with Filis, must earn her love
by helping her find her departed lover, Sireno, who has lost his memory due to the
magical spells of his uncle, Maggio. Obviously, the fairy-tale plot is not sufficient to
hold an audience for 45 minutes; imaginative staging and exciting performances
must fill out the play if it is to be made worthwhile. The CRT has failed to provide
either commodity.
Dr. Jay Davis apparently is willing to accept the credit for directing this
presentation, but, despite a formidable list of past activities, he has failed to create
any kind of enchanting entertainment.
The short biographies of the four cast members in the program indicate that the
"Rationalizing The Enchanted Tree' as
a children's play is ridiculous and
unacceptable. Only foolish adults believe
that children will be fooled by slapdash and
uninspired theatrics."
CRT has assembled a fantastic array of talent. Barbara Rowedder sings beautifully,
and Fred Lloyd is packed with energy, but, unfortunately, no other theatrical
abilities are displayed beyond the usual Readers Theatre propensity for cute
mugging:
Kirk Lovell,"a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, proves
such an incredibly sloppy stage magician that his feeble attempts to fool the
audience as Maggio were outrageously ludicrous. It is distressing to consider that
this man has spent 14 years of his life practicing magic; Someone should tell him
that pulling junk out of pockets in a flowing robe has never before qualified as such.
In fact, every aspect of the production lacks any kind of magic, a quality which is
essential in such a presentation. Rationalizing The Enchanted Tree as a children's
play is ridiculous and unacceptable. Only foolish adults believe that children will be
fooled by slapdash and uninspired theatrics.
