We're basically older and maybe . . . more mature," Pate said. "This dub will cross all racial, sexual and ethnic backgrounds it will be just a collection of typical Americans. Although Pate sent out more than 200 letters to some of U NCs 8 1 5 veterans, he was pleased with Thursday's turnout of 25 people. From this group, a steering committee of eight veterans was formed to draft a constitution. SG will fund us if we get a constitution written and have it approved by the Dean of Student Affairs. But SG is putting the screws to us already since they'll be handling our purse strings," Pate said. Pate's group is patterned after the veterans club at North Carolina State University. State's club earned an additional $2,000 last year by bagging books at the school store, washing cars and running one of Carter Stadium's four concession stands. Pate thinks such projects are necessary to insure the group's freedom from SG control. King commemorated by Andy Sldden Staff Writer The Black Student Movement (BSM) will join other groups from across the state for a march Wednesday in Raleigh, commemorating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The decision to join the march was made during a, BSM central committee meeting Monday. Representatives from the group triD also participate in a "Black Leadership Summit Conference" to be held before the march. BSM has not made any plans for campus activities to commemorate Dr. King's Save a tree! Save a buck! In addition to serving as a social outlet for veterans and their families, UNCs Veterans' Club will be a lobbying group for special problems of veterans. Pate agreed with several members who spoke out at Thursday's meeting against the recently passed GI educational assistance bilL "The bill discriminates against people who work hard, and it was an oversight on whoever's part in not applying it to graduate school," he said. Pate is also seeking a special orientation program for incoming veterans to UNC. He would also like -to see changes in other veterans' benefits, such as the VA hospital program, which he says is not even as good as the Student Health Services. Pate prefers however, to refrain from speaking in specifics until the club has been organized. "The good thing about this is that we can do whatever we want with this club and I won't know exactly what that will be until we talk with everyone involved, see what they want, and draw up a constitution." M to maffclhi birthday, but Robert Wynn, vice president of BSM, said if they did have any, they would probably be similar to the memorial march that the group has held in the past. The plans for the Raleigh march and -conference were first announced Thursday by the Rev. Leon White, state director of the United Church of Christ's Commission for Racial Justice, and Golden Frinks, state field director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. "We are calling for all black people to leave their jobs, students to leave their schools and housewives to leave their homes to participate in this memorial to our greatest national leader," White said of the march. He said the "summit conference" would draw up proposals for presentation to Gov. James E. Holshouser, Jr. and the General Assembly. Wynn said his group had not yet decided on the proposals they would present at the conference, but that the group would have some by Wednesday. Abolition of the death penalty was top priority, White said, for the state's black leaders, t,.,, r Tf- White aTsosa)d nor nation has seen fit to make Dr. King's birthday a holiday.
