The Dally Tar Heel Tuesday, January 14, 1975 ; "It Happened One Night" Clark Gable is a cynical reporter and Claudette Colbert the runaway society bride he's pursuing cross country In this 1934 comedy which won Oscars for Gable and Colbert, the director. (Frank Capra), the screenwriter and as Best Picture the first and only time for such a clean sweep. Several scenes Are film-famous, notably Colbert's hitchhiking lesson and the later sequence where they are forced to share a motel room, separated by a blanket hung on a line, (Tuesday at 7 and 930 p.m., Greenlaw Auditorium, $1.25, the Alternative Cinema American Comedy Series). -ite Million" - This 1931 Rene Clair film is similar to his earlier "Italian Straw Hat," but, as Peter Cowle writes in Seventy Years of Cinema, it "gains considerably from the presence of sound . . . Two down-at-heels artists, Michel and Prospere, are apparently redeemed when Michel hears that he has won a lottery worth a million francs. But the ticket has been mislaid, and as Michel and his friend ' pursue It from one person to another across Paris, so their creditors pursue them. The chase leads inevitably to a climax at the Opera-Lyrique, where the ticket is in the possession of a monstrous tenor about to sail for America . . .The soundtrack is used with aplomb.' (Wednesday at 8 p.m., Carroll Hall, Union free flick, French Cinema Series). "Gold Diggers of 1933" The ultimate Depression musical from Busby Berkeley opens with a hundred chorus girls, clad In nothing but gold coins singing "We're in the Money." Ginger Rogers steps to the fore and warbles a couple of verses in Pig Latin, and the movie spins dizzily into a witty naive story about three showgirls (Rogers, Ruby Keeler and Aline MacMahon) trying to stay alive and get a little tap dancing in, too. The Berkeley production numbers feature neon-lit violins, pettln' in the park and a massive finale about doughboys, breadlines and the sorry state of the economy. The script is the best of all the Warner Brothers musicals. (Thursday at 7 and 930 p.m., Greenlaw Auditorium, $1.25, Alternative Cinema Musical). I IX W A A ( W -7 S.
