Franklin St. , DOWNTOWN Chapol Hill Well ii em pirdl by George Oasco Staff Writer "It's upsetting for me to have to suffer this harrassment," Carrboro Mayor Robert Wells said Wednesday in response to charges of bias made by Alderman George Beswick. Beswick protested the procedure used in selecting Jesse L. Greeson as the new town manager Tuesday and also questioned Wells and the Board of Aldermen's final decision. Beswick said the town's charter was violated because written notice was not delivered to each board member's residence at least six hours before Monday night's executive session. "I had no feeling of disregarding the town charter or the general statute," Wells said. "There are just some things that I think people would accept as common sense." Wells said that because Beswick was a member of the selection committee which called for the meeting, "there was no need to go through the trouble of having the police department deliver a notice." "1 feel honestly and truly, that as mayor of this community. I have followed the letter of the law; Mr. Alderman John Boone did not see any reason why he should receive any written notice," Wells said. Boone, a member of the selection committee, said Wednesday he felt Beswick's charges were unsubstantiated. 'I don't know where he got his charges from, and nobody has anything to hide." Boone said. Wells also answered allegations by Beswick that he had biased the board's decision by having his secretary attach favorable comments form Greeson's former employer to Greeson's resume. Greeson is the former town clerk of Henderson. 1 added the comments because I thought they woujd be helpful, but 1 could not reach the former employers of the other candidates," Wells said. Wells also defended the choice of Greeson. "Sometimes a man that doesn't have strings of degrees might fit into your situation just as well because common sense will tell you some things that you learn accidently." -I want someone who will not only serve Carrboro, but who someone else would want, and who will make a name for himself " Wells said. Alderman Braxton Fouchee said Wednesday he would meet with Beswick to discuss the possibility of challenging the appointment on the grounds that they did not receive written notice of the meeting. "I'm quite sure we are going to take action, but I'm quite sure we are going to lose if it reaches a vote again," Foushee said. Foushee said, however, that if he were Greeson, he would reconsider accepting the job, "knowing he was not a clear-cut choice." Greeson was introduced to the board last night. He will assume his duties as soon as he locates a place to live.
