IN THE BASEMENT OF THE UNION. 933 8353, 8:30-4:30 M.-F. by Elliott Vamock Sports Editor Okay.i.letY try to get this straight. Duke beat Carolina; Carolina beat Wake Forest; Wake Forest beat N.C. State; State beat Virginia; but Carolina beat Virginia and the Cavs beat Duke. Hold it a second; let's try that again. Wake Forest beat Duke; bur Wake and Virginia seem to be in trouble. Clemson beat Maryland, but Maryland beat State, and State beat Carolina. Hell, now we're back where we started. Therefore, Carolina should be the ACC champs...or Carolina should be the last place team in theconference...or. Maryland should be the NCAA champs...or something like that. Ad infinitum...ad nauseum. So we should all quit trying to compare scores at this point and absorb a couple of facts. Maryland will play host to'Carolina at 3 p.m. Saturday in College Park. Maryland will be trying to bounce back after the Terps defeat at theVpaws of Clemson's Tigers, while Carolina is fresh from an ACC win over .Virginia. The Tar Heels' 85-70 victory Wednesday night was dull to watch, unless you were wearing Carolina blue, but impressive on the stat sheets. Four Carolina players scored in double figures...and we don't mean 10 points each, either. Mitch Kupchak pumped in 27 points and snared 15 rebounds to lead both categories. Walter Davis and Phil Ford both scored 18 points. Brad Hoffman scored 14. Carolina was shooting red-hot against Virginia in the first half, blazing away at 72.0 per cent clip to run up a 44- 33 halftime lead. The Tar Heels finished the game shooting 65.2 per cent. Virginia was out-rebounded by the Heels, 37-21. Maryland didn't do nearly as well against Clemson. The Tigers edged the fourth-ranked Terps, 83-82 in front of a record 1 1,800 fans at Clemson. "I told the team the hardest thing one had to face was prosperity," said Maryland coach Lefty Driesell after the loss. "Since we were ranked fourth in the country, people were going to be coming at us like Tigers, and that's what Clemson did to us tonight." Maryland had been leading the ACC standings with an unblemished 3-0 record before the loss, and will probably take some advice from the Tigers when Carolina enters Cole Field House. UNC would take first place in the ACC with a win over Maryland. You can't be sure who will finally win the ACC, but you can be positive the Terp's won't be playing like turtles Saturday afternoon. Elliott Vcrnock, Editor host Swimmers to Jaybirds tonight The Tar Heel swimming and diving team ran off with an easy 70-43 victory over Wake Forest, Wednesday, and now must face Johns Hopkins tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Bowman Gray Pool. The Deacs did not put up much of a fight in Wednesday's meet. Carolina won 10 of the 13 events, and went 1-2 in three events. Many Tar Heel swimmers were put in events they don't usually swim. Karl Thiele was the only Tar Heel to win two events. Thiele, who usually swims the breastroke and 200 freestyle, won both the 1000 and 100 freestyle events. Doug Levin finished second to Thiele in the 1000 freestyle. Freshman Mike Reock, who is usually a sprint freestyler, won the 200 freestyle, and Steve McDonald won in his events, the 500 freestyle. Tom Berry finished second to Reock in the 200 freestyle. Other Tar Heel victors include Rich DeSelm (200 individual medley), Alan Toll (200 butterfly), J ody Inglefield (200 breastroke), Jim Seitz (one-meter diving) and Ben Aycock (three-meter diving). Carolina's medley relay team of Mark List, Inglefield, Toll and McDonald was also victorious. Tonight UNC faces one of the top Division II college swim teams in the nation in Johns Hopkins. The Jaybirds sport three All-Americans and three other top athletes. Carolina's depth, however, should be the telling factor in the meet. Mark Horning is John Hopkins top swimmer. He has been an All-American the last three years, and has been given that honor in four different events. Jim Finnerty, a two-time Ail American in the sprint freestyle events, and Tom Stenovec, an Ail-American in the 400 individual medley, are the top Jaybird swimmers. Johns Hopkins also has a top diver in Mike Tobir. Kevin G arris Carolina Students Prefer CAROLINA COPY CENTER Copies Printed While You Wait lVe Guarantee Quality, Speed and Low Price!
