Forty-five inmates who have requested help and counseling from a church-related community volunteer program are not receiving it because of a lack of volunteers. "Project In-reach." sponsored by the University United Methodist Church, initiates one-to-one relationships between a volunteer from the community and an inmate who requests help. The program meets once a week at the. Orange County Prison Unit and operates on the assumption that one of the main problems of inmates is a poor self-image. The counselors try to instill initiative and confidence in the inmates to help them adjust to society when they are released, an "In reach" brochure stated. Volunteers are screened and required to participate in a comprehensive twelve week, p re-service orientation program. Upon completion of the program, the volunteers will visit and correspond with an assigned inmate. Drew. Henry, an associate minister and director of the program, noted that participants are expected to give an hour each week to inmates for at least six months. "Continuity is a very important part of the program," he said. Applications and more information can be obtained by stopping by the "In-reach" office inside the . Methodist Church on Franklin Street. A training meeting will be held tonight at 7:30. Interested students should contact Drew Henry at 929-7 1 9 1. . - x. IRJSTAoCOPY O sn v . Quality Copying ' ' ''y " J at 105 N.
